Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) exploded at President Obama's ambassador to Syria on Thursday, telling him he might be better suited for a desk job as an economist rather than trying to end a conflict that has killed more than 70,000 people over the past two years.

McCain's outburst was sparked after he asked Amb. Robert Ford if he agreed with the Pentagon's assessment that it has the capability to protect a no-fly zone over areas taken over by the rebels. “I'm an economist, not a military strategist,” Ford began to say during a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“Wait a minute – you're supposed to know the situation on the ground,” said McCain, the administration's lead critic on Syria policy. “You were the ambassador there. If anybody is supposed to know what's going on in Syria, it's you.

“So for you to tell me you're an economist – then maybe you're suited for a job as an economist over at the State Department, not as the lead on Syria.”

McCain also objected to Ford's assessment that Syrian rebels are grateful for America's $385 million in humanitarian aid. Syrians he's met in refugee camps, McCain said, are “angry and bitter” at the administration's refusal to provide arms to the rebels.

The panel's chairman, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), on Thursday became the latest lawmaker to join calls to arm the rebels.

Looked through the clip of the hearing. He wasn't there.

Rubio's penned another op-ed calling for more US action in Syria.

Dear god... Rand needs to push this back. He's probably been busy with the gun control thing.

They should appoint McCain to be the Ambassador to Syria.
