Congressman Ron Paul has wanted to eliminate the federal Department of Education for years. In a New York Times interview (11-14-08) he said, “First, the Constitution does not authorize the Department of Education, and the founders never envisioned the federal government dictating those education policies. Second, it is a huge bureaucracy that squanders our money. We send billions of dollars to Washington and get back less than we sent. The money would be much better off left in states and local communities rather than being squandered in Washington."

The acerbic Texan continued, "Finally, I think that the smallest level of government possible best performs education. Teachers, parents, and local community leaders should be making decisions about exactly how our children should be taught, not Washington bureaucrats. The Department of Education has given us No Child Left Behind, massive unfunded mandates, indoctrination, and in some cases, forced medication of our children with psychotropic drugs. We should get rid of all of that and get those choices back in the hands of the people.”

Among the educational “choices” parents have explored over the years, home schooling has been a particularly controversial one so it was interesting to learn that Paul is creating a K-12 homeschooling curriculum (www.ronpaulcurriculum.com/public/main.cfm) that teaches students, among other things, free market economic theory, Austrian school.

As one might expect from Ron Paul and his partner in this venture, Gary North, the program also emphasizes Western Civilization, with courses in American history, the United States Constitution, American geography, and government. It includes all the basic building blocks of academics: mathematics, earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics and even offers a course in fundamental study skills. According to promotional material, “Students will be taught the basics of video production, website design, and Internet marketing. A few of them will have profitable businesses by the time they are 16.” Further details can be obtained at the website and, if you need further incentive to explore it, the entire package has been designed with single-income families in mind – in other words, it’s very affordable.
