Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) released a report documenting attempted abuses of federal power by the Obama administration on Tuesday, saying the administration “knows virtually no bounds.”

Cruz points to Obama’s own Supreme Court appointees, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, to make his case:

"When President Obama’s own Supreme Court nominees join their colleagues in unanimously rejecting the Administration’s call for broader federal power six times in just over one year, the inescapable conclusion is that the Obama Administration’s view of federal power knows virtually no bounds,” the senator’s report said.

Cruz is a new Senator. How on earth did he become the "ranking member" of anything?

Cruz, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on The Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, said the cases “demonstrate an astonishing view of federal power on behalf of the Obama Administration.”

Cruz is a new Senator. How on earth did he become the "ranking member" of anything?

The Senate Judiciary Committee has 18 members and seven subcommittees. Each subcommittee has its own chairman and "ranking member."

The charman (Leahy) and "ranking member" (Grassley) of the main committee are not also the chairman or "ranking member" of any of the subcommittees.

So, of the 18 members, 16 are either a chairman or "ranking member" of either the main committee or one of the subcommittees.

Cruz, Lee and Flake are all freshmen Senators. Even so (given the above), at least one of them could be expected to hold a position. And in fact, all of them do:

As noted, Ted Cruz is the "ranking member" of the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights subcommittee.
Mike Lee is the "ranking member" of the Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consuber Rights subcommittee.
Jeff Flake is the "ranking member" of the Privacy, Technology and the Law subcommittee.

Ain't bureaucracy grand?
