TOKYO (AP) — The operator of Japan's crippled nuclear plant said Saturday that it is moving tons of highly radioactive water from a temporary storage tank to another after detecting signs of leakage — a blow to the plant struggling with the tight storage space.

Tokyo Electric power Co. said an estimated 120 tons of the water are believed to have breached the tank's inner linings, although little is thought to have leaked into the soil. TEPCO is moving the water to a nearby tank — a process that could take several days.

TEPCO detected the leak earlier this week, when radiation levels spiked in water samples collected in between the inner linings of the tank. Radiation levels in water samples taken outside the tank also have increased, an indication of the water leak, TEPCO spokesman Masayuki Ono said.

The leak is not only an immediate environmental concern, but threatens TEPCO's tightrope water management situation, he said.

The tank contains 13,000 tons of the water, which is part of the water that was used to cool melted fuel at the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors damaged in the March 2011 disaster. So much water has been used that TEPCO is struggling to find storage space.

More than 270,000 tons of highly radioactive water is already stored in hundreds of gigantic tanks and another underground tank. They are visible even at the plant's entrance and built around the compound, taking up more than 80 percent of its storage capacity.

TEPCO expects the amount to double over three years and plans to build hundreds more tanks by mid-2015 to meet the demand.

Because of that, TEPCO is anxious to launch a new water treatment system that can purify the contaminated water. The machine, called ALPS, recently started a final test run after six months of delays due to safety requirements by government regulators.

TEPCO officials have indicated hopes to release the water into the ocean. Ono said TEPCO has no immediate plans to do so without public acceptance.

The plant is being decommissioned but continues to experience glitches. A fuel storage pool temporarily its lost cooling system Friday, a month after a similar 30-hour outage.

The underground tank, several times the size of an Olympic-size swimming pool and similar to an industrial waste dump, is dug directly into the ground and protected by two layers of polyethylene linings inside the outermost clay-based lining, with a felt padding in between each layer.

The meltdowns have caused the plant to release radiation into the surroundings and displaced about 160,000 people from around the plant. They do not know when or if they will be able to return home.

USA Today, not sure news coming from their mouth droolers is really worth the paper its printed on.

None the less, Fukushima is a very serious threat to the entire planet.

But in all honesty, I'd check rense.com for the most accurate information on the still ongoing situation at Fukushima, even if they occasionally do link to USA Today...

I've previously posted these videos here at the forum but here they are again.....

This is truly some messed up shit. This is leaking into the ocean and contaminating the food chain indefinitely. Once the damage is contained which is highly unknown, we then have too look forward to reversing it, which cant be done for thousands of years.

Anyone care for some sushi?

Listen to what these fools have had to say. Seriously?

Ya, you sure as hell don't want to rely on MSNBC for reporting on this matter. As many here know, they are a sister company of GE who provided those nuclear reactors the GE Mark 1s.

If there is any spinning going on in the MSM it is the suppression of information and disinformation on what needs reported. I'm certain there isn't any desire on the media to sensationalize this as they do other matters.

The truth is we should be pissed with how this is being viewed. If we think this is the last of these disasters, we are burring our heads in the sand.

Maybe the USA can take that water and use it to irrigate our GMO crops so they grow better.

Here is one of the most in-depth documentaries on the Fukushima disaster. A host of mistakes, design short comings, and coordination of resources. Yet they still don't know how it failed. Of course that didn't stop other plants that were shut down, from going back on line .........

Massive Leaks Continuing On a Daily Basis … For Years On End
http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/2013-04-06/fukushima-massive-leaks-continuing-daily-basis-%E2%80%A6-years-end

You may have heard that Tepco - the operator of the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plants - announced a large leak of radioactive water.

You may have heard that the cooling system in the spent fuel pools at Fukushima has failed for a second time in a month.

This is newsworthy stuff ... but completely misses the big picture.

Japanese experts say that Fukushima is currently releasing up to 93 billion becquerels of radioactive cesium into the ocean each day.

How much radiation is this?

A quick calculation shows that it is about ten thousand times less than the amounts released by Chernobyl during the actual fire at the Russian nuclear plant. But the Chernobyl fire only last 10 days ... and the Fukushima release has been ongoing for more than 2 years so far.

Indeed, Fukushima has already spewed much more radioactive cesium and iodine than Chernobyl. The amount of radioactive cesium released by Fukushima was some 20-30 times higher than initially admitted.

Fukushima also pumped out huge amounts of radioactive iodine 129 – which has a half-life of 15.7 million years. Fukushima has also dumped up to 900 trillion becquerels of radioactive strontium-90 – which is a powerful internal emitter which mimics calcium and collects in our bones – into the ocean.

And the amount of radioactive fuel at Fukushima dwarfs Chernobyl ... and so could keep leaking for decades, centuries or millenia.

Tepco graphics of the Fukushima plants even appear to show water directly flowing from the plant to the ocean. And see this.

The bottom line is that the reactors have lost containment. There are not "some leaks" at Fukushima. "Leaks" imply that the reactor cores are safely in their containment buildings, and there is a small hole or two which need to be plugged. But scientists don't even know where the cores of the reactors are. That's not leaking. That's even worse than a total meltdown.

So what are the consequences for people living outside of Fukushima itself?

They could be quite severe, indeed.

As for lessons learnt, is Obama team taking needed steps to avoid such mishaps here?

And by better, they mean "glow in the dark lettuce" that we can farm in the dark!
