MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A detective was gunned down inside the city's own police headquarters Thursday evening.

At this time, not many details have been released into what exactly happened. But we do know that shots rang out downtown at Jackson Police Headquarters just before 6 p.m.

Police Chief Rebecca Coleman says 40-year-old Detective Eric Smith was with 23-year-old murder suspect, Jeremy Powell, in a third floor interview room. That is when she says gun shots were heard. Police rushed in to find the suspect and the detective both dead.

Detective Smith worked in the robbery homicide division and had been with the Jackson Police Department since 1995. City leaders say his loss is a loss for the entire community.

"This is indeed a sad day for the city, JPD, our hearts go out to the smith family," said Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson.

"He was a real man in every sense of the word in terms of trying to help his community and family," said Chokwe Lumumba, Jackson City Council.

Detective Smith leaves behind a wife and two sons. We are told his wife is also an officer with the Jackson Police Department.

Both the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Jackson Police are investigating. We expect to learn more information throughout the day.
