[NOTE: LIFE.com is aware that encountering images of guns and children in a classroom might be distressing to some readers — even if those images were made decades ago and depict an adult instructing schoolkids in a rural community in the proper and safe use of firearms. Our intention is not to incite, or inflame, but to add context and perhaps even some nuance to the current national dialog around guns and gun violence in the United States.]

they should do this again to promote gun safety to kids and to teach them to report illegal ownership / suspicious behavior to parents/authorities.

These photos ARE distressing.

Distressing that there actually used to be a time when all kids were trained in self-defense and gun safety, and now it could be considered a crime to do so.

This school must have had hundreds of shootings in the 50's.

Oh my god! They're coming right at us! I love these forums. The only place you will get a warning about a potentially sickening disclaimer.

Photos like these remind me how lucky we are today to have hard working politicians working tirelessly to protect our children. Think of all the twisted crimes these children went on to commit....

This is what I want my police officers doing. Educating youngsters about the safe use of firearms. What way can you better serve a community than this?

When I was in highschool a policeman brought in a "radar gun" to show us. Quite the difference there.

Saddest thing I have ever seen.....

Why sad? Because it shows just how much, and how quickly our America has changed and not for the better. Anyone of these pics nowadays would have created a "lockdown," SWAT callout, arrests, suspensions, and possibly shooting.

Yeah, I'm not so sure that's a good idea anymore... Here's the modern-day version of the time article:

I learned how to shoot shotguns, rifles and 100-lb compound bows in boy scouts back when I was 11 years old. That was in 1999! Even in high school as late as 2007 we were using bows in Physical Education class.

I noticed, it just seemed a tiny point in the overall loss of liberty. As Ron Paul says about the 47% who don't pay taxes: "Wonderful! We're half way there!!" :p

I took a gun safety course in high school. It was sponsored by our chemistry teacher who allowed his students the option of attending the class or going to study hall. If I remember correctly it was a full week course. Of course we are talking a small town and this was 35 years ago
