Police rushed to Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton Thursday morning after security personnel called to report that explosives were found inside a building at the facility, a laboratory spokesperson confirmed.

Suffolk County police said officers from the Emergency Services Section were on scene assisting law enforcement at the laboratory, but a police spokesperson deferred further comment to laboratory officials.

A spokesman for Brookhaven National Laboratory said an employee was moving contents and packing items in an office inside the “National Synchrotron Light Source-1 facility” on the grounds of the secure laboratory. While inside the office, the employee found a box marked with a United States Transportation Department label indicating the contents were “Explosive C,” according to a statement released by the laboratory.

The spokesman said that the employee who found the explosives immediately notified the Laboratory Protection Division, which oversees security, fire and rescue operations at the 5,265-acre facility. Responding officials “immediately removed the device to an outdoor location and then contacted the Suffolk County Police Department requesting its assistance,” spokesman Jim Green said in a statement.

Emergency Service officers from Suffolk County responded to the facility and “safely removed the box.” The suspicious device was taken to an off-site police firing range for “further evaluation,” officials said. Authorities later learned that the box contained commercially manufactured small industrial detonators, Green said. Those products are used in a variety of industrial applications, according to the statement.

“The devices appeared to have been properly packaged for commercial shipping,” said Green. He added that a joint investigation by laboratory officials, Suffolk County police, the device manufacturer and facility management remains ongoing.
