W.Va. sheriff shot, suspect in custody

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) — An emergency official says a West Virginia county sheriff has been shot and a suspect is in custody.

Mingo County Office of Emergency Services head dispatcher Willis Spence says Sheriff Eugene Crum was shot Wednesday within a block of the county Courthouse. Spence did not know Crum's condition.

Spence says the courthouse is closed and further information wasn't immediately available.

The shooting comes on the heels of a Texas district attorney and his wife being shot to death in their home over the weekend, and officials suspect a white supremacist prison gang. The killing happened a couple of months after one of the county's assistant district attorneys was killed near his courthouse office.

And less than two weeks ago, Colorado's prison chief was shot to death at his front door, apparently by a white supremacist ex-convict.

BREAKING NEWS: Mingo County Sheriff Shot and Killed, Suspect in Custody

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Law enforcement and emergency officials tell WSAZ.com that Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum has been shot and killed.

The shooting happened about one block from the Mingo County Courthouse near the corner of 3rd and Harvey Streets about noon on Wednesday.

Officials tell WSAZ.com that Sheriff Crum was on his lunch break when he got shot.

West Virginia State Police tell WSAZ.com that the suspect was shot as he was trying to flee the scene. He has been taken to Logan Regional Medical Center. No word on his condition.

The Mingo County Tax Office tells WSAZ.com that the entire courthouse has been evacuated.

According to officials, Sheriff Crum was the only victim in the shooting.

We have a crew headed to the scene.
