of course, these being people who particularly need arms to have equal force in a self defense situation.

Individuals 55 and older would lose their right to keep and bear arms under a provision that’s expected to be included as part of a comprehensive United Nations Global Arms Trade Treaty.

UN Secretary Gen. Ban Ki-moon spoke about the impetus behind the controversial measure at a press conference over the weekend in New York City, the site of the final negotiations between the 193 Member States.

“Regulating the international transfers of both weapons and ammunition is a key component of a robust arms trade treaty, as is limiting civilian access to small arms and munitions,” said Ban Ki-moon.

“There’s an emerging consensus that certain groups should be restricted from possessing conventional arms, certainly those who fuel conflict, arm criminals or violations of international humanitarian or human rights law are at the top of the list,” Ban Ki-moon continued.

“But also, the international community believes segments of the population that present a danger to themselves and others, chiefly individuals deemed or adjudicated mentally defective and persons with attenuating cerebral faculties, should be added to that list.”

While Ban Ki-moon did not elaborate on what he meant by persons with “attenuating cerebral faculties,” a UN liaison with Amnesty International spelled it out in an interview with the Washington Post.

“Simply put, the UN believes guns don’t belong in the hands of the elderly,” said H. Michael Chase, an attorney for the human rights watchdog group.

“Pools of research show that a significant majority of gun-related suicides, accidental shootings, non-fatal negligent discharges are perpetrated by persons 55 and over,” Chase said.

“Along with the mentally ill, preventing those who are advancing in age from gaining easy access to firearms is a common sense way to save lives,” concluded Chase.

Dr. Michael Betti from the John Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness embraced the UN’s call to disarm senior citizens.

“Science tells us that we grow old,” said Dr. Betti, a neurologist who specializes in evaluating and treating patients with memory disorders. “And as we do, our reflexes diminish, our senses become impaired and our cognitive skills weaken … Therefore, as we enter our twilight years – clinically speaking, age 50 and above [Global life expectancy is only 67 years] – science tells us that we are in no shape to be handling or using a deadly weapon.”

In lieu of firearms, Dr. Betti suggests that seniors find other, non-violent and non-lethal options for self-defense.

That is one of those April fools day news reports.

I am writing to ask you to please SUPPORT the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, by OPPOSING the new United Nations "Small Arms and Light Weapons" Treaty.

Inclusion of small arms, ammunition and detailed reporting requirements raise potentially serious Second Amendment issues, irrespective of introductory clauses that indicate an intent not to regulate arms transfers occurring "exclusively" within the territory of a member state or "lawful" ownership for use in "recreational, cultural, historical, and sporting activities." The back door to achieving global regulation of domestic sales is the provision in the most current treaty text that would require member states to clamp down on "the possible diversion of arms into the illicit market". The risk of "possible diversion" a la Fast & Furious will become the rationale for regulating guns everywhere.

This treaty would be an OUTRAGEOUS violation of our Second Amendment rights. Please, PROTECT American sovereignty and SUPPORT the U.S. Constitution, by OPPOSING the new United Nations "Small Arms and Light Weapons" Treaty. I'm counting on you to do the RIGHT thing, and I will be watching your actions on this matter closely. Thank you.

I don't know why everyone here is so worried about the UN.The UN has no power what so ever. The UN can write all the laws it wants, the truth is the fat cops where I live that don't even bother to uphold the local laws won't give a s**t about the UN laws.It all comes down to ones government and what they want to do,if they have sold you out the UN does not matter at all.All the UN is ever used for is for a punching bag,so instead of the government taking the blame for enacting the law on a national level, they enact it on an international level, blame it all on the UN and get out of it with their hands clean.

The UN told the US not to invade Iraq like a thousand times, the EU,Russia and China all told the US not to invade Iraq because there is no justification for it,did the US government listen to the UN ? NO because unless the UN is acting in their interests no one gives a crap about what the UN thinks. And this is not just in the case of the great powers, but even the poorest guys in Central Africa don't care what the UN thinks unless it is in their interests.

Might be an April fool's joke today, but doesn't mean something like this or worse won't happen. The gun grabbers are trying to squeeze from both extremes of the age spectrum; that's part of their strategy. If you're under 18 you're too young & someday if you're over 65, then you'll be too old. Later it'll be between 21 and 55; then after that it'll be no one is old enough or young enough.

Either way, the UN and the gun grabbers are like these 2 guys, and we're like the grandpa defending everyone else:
