A Florida Atlantic University student who filed a complaint against his professor after he was ordered to stomp on the name of Jesus has been brought up on academic charges by the school and may no longer attend class, according to documents obtained by Fox News.

The “Notice of Charges” against Ryan Rotela is contrary to a statement the university released late Friday night saying no one had been disciplined as a result of the classroom activity.

“We can confirm that no student has been expelled, suspended or disciplined by the university as a result of any activity that took place during this class,” the university said in a prepared statement.

However, according to a letter written by Associate Dean Rozalia Williams, Rotela is facing a litany of charges – including an alleged violation of the student code of conduct, acts of verbal, written or physical abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion or other conduct which threaten the health, safety or welfare of any person.”

“In the interim, you may not attend class or contact any of the students involved in this matter – verbally or electronically – or by any other means,” Williams wrote to Rotela. “Please be advised that a Student Affairs hold may be placed on your records until final disposition of the complaint.”

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation at the Liberty Institute, told Fox News the university’s behavior is “outlandish” and called their press release “inaccurate.”

“We believe the university punished him in retaliation for him exposing the class assignment to the public,” Sasser said. “Sadly, it is a testimony to the indoctrination that some of the public schools and universities are engaging in – to demonize anything that was valuable in the culture.”

They decided not to charge the student. Not because it's the right thing to do, but because the public got mad.

The exercise would have been better if they had used the American flag. That's something worth stomping on. I guess it wouldn't have been as provocative as 'Jesus' based on what they were going for with the class experiment.

Just to add:

I think it's ridiculous that any sort of charge would be filed over a simple refusal to participate. I almost feel like we're missing part of the story here and the kid bitch-slapped the teacher or something, that's how ridiculous it is.

Maybe a picture of GWB would have worked better, but this is so typical, refusal to comply with any orders given by anyone, even if those orders are unlawful, is a crime unto itself.

If they had picked an old Nazi flag with a swastika for them to stomp on, the school and most of the media would have said it was inappropriate and promoting hatred of current Germans or something idiotic like that, but stomp on Jesus? Shut up and eat your horse meat, Mundane!

It would be around-the-clock coverage if that ever happened. Veterans, active military personel, and our dear leaders would come out in uniform disgust at the mere audacity to tarnish the likeness of the state.

Seriously. I mean, even for non-believers, the simple idea of who Jesus was and what he stood for, whether a made up story or not, is infinitely more useful and beneficial to society than a country's banner perverted in a history of murder and imperialism. I think it was an incredibly poor choice for the class assignment in the first place, but what's done is done now. As I understand it, the goal of the classroom activity was to see if anyone would hesitate, and subsequently discuss why. Someone of very strong faith can easily be offended and refusing to participate is fair. It should be a no questions asked, no harm done sort of deal. That should have been the end of it, no repercussions.

How right you are. I am not a Christian and I would not stomp on an image of Jesus any more than I would Ghandi. It is out of respect for the teachings they attribute to them. I don't know or even care whether he actually lived or not. Huge schools teaching no principles. Fine, I can play their game: "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me!" - Rage Against the Machine

Am I the only one who doesn't think the flag represents the state? For me, it represents the Founders and the Revolution. I'm sure that's what it meant to Betsy Ross. http://www.usflag.org/about.betsy.ross.html

The pledge of allegiance and its socialist author, is another thing altogether.

The flag represents what America is supposed to mean. That they muddied and drug it through everyone of their bullshit conflicts is besides the point.

The flag would probably burn itself if it knew how soiled it's become. I still respect what it has stood for.

There has got to be more to this story than what we are getting. The behavior of both the school and the student support this. Also these very vaguely written reports on what happened really seem to be cherry picking crap. Also it is fox news.

I'm pretty sure we are missing part of what happened. It is okay for classes to do controversial things; that shouldn't be discouraged. But for a school to put him on probation essentially, he would have had to do something actually pretty heinous. Believe me, my university was as corrupt as they come. He probably threatened the professor with violence.
