If we've all come to the same analogy that the MSM is not to be trusted, where do we look to for non-special interest news? I am looking to get my news from some more trustworthy websites. Any ideas?

Asia Times is a great site for commentary and economic news. M K Bhadrakumar is one of my favorite writers on that site. He's a retired Indian diplomat with good sources and even better instincts. The "Mogambo Guru" writes about inflation in a way that is both funny and informative. Syed Saleem Shahzad is another good one.

The Christian Science Monitor (http://csmonitor.com) (ignore the silly name) is generally a pretty good source for "just the news."

Otherwise, I just search Google News for "Ron Paul." :)

World Net Daily is sometimes right on... sometimes neo-con on foreign policy.

CSM is good, Guardian has some good stuff. Overall, its important to just be discerning, and have at least a halfway decent understanding of history to keep things in perspective....

That hits the nail on the head, and it is sadly a comment on the reason why so many are uninformed isn't it........

There is no such thing as unbiased news. Even the act of deciding what to report and not report is an act of bias.

I read:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/
http://www.nytimes.com/
http://news.yahoo.com/i/716

All of which are old media. I read them for the what, not the why.

I balance it out with:
http://www.lewrockwell.com/
http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/
http://antiwar.com/
http://www.antiwar.com/blog/
http://www.consortiumnews.com/
http://www.theamericancause.org/
http://www.freedominourtime.blogspot.com/
http://reason.com/
http://reason.com/blog/
http://www.counterpunch.org/

CounterPunch, you ask? Aren't they Socialists? Maybe, but they are the honest kind, and even the radical anti-capitalists over there know what's happening:

If you want to blame someone; blame Alan Greenspan. He's the one who created this mess. According to the economist Mike Shedlock:

"The Fed caused the credit crunch by slashing interest rates to 1 per cent to bail out its banking buddies in the wake of a dotcom bubble collapse. All the Fed did was create a bigger bubble. This bubble is so big in fact that it cannot even be bailed out. It's the end of the line for a serially bubble blowing Fed.

"So not only was this the biggest credit bubble in history, this was also the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class to the already enormously wealthy. That is the real travesty of justice regardless of whether or not the price tag is $1 trillion, $2 trillion, or $10 trillion." (Mike Shedlock, "Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis")

The problem has gotten so serious that even Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Paulson, is putting up red flags. Last week, Paulson ignited a sell-off on Wall Street when he made this statement:

"The nature of the problem will be significantly bigger next year because 2006 [mortgages] had lower underwriting standards, no amortization, and no down payments....We're never going to be able to process the number of workouts and modifications (to mortgages) that are going to be necessary doing it just sort of one-off. I've talked to enough people now to know that there's no way that's going to work."

The desperation is palpable. Like Schwarzenegger, Paulson is trying to get mortgage-lenders to provide a safety net for struggling borrowers who are defaulting on their loans.

Paulson is calling for emergency legislation that will allow the Federal Housing Administration to play a greater role in the relief effort. The FHA has already expanded its traditional role by taking on hundreds of billions in extra debt just to keep a few "private" mortgage lenders and banks from going bankrupt. Of course, when Paulson's plan goes kaput and the debts pile up; it'll be the taxpayer that foots the bill.

This is great advice.

I visit TheRealNews.Com (http://therealnews.com), LifeAfterTheOilCrash.net (http://lifeaftertheoilcrash.net), Rense.com, Drudge.com and many others. The more points of views you can get the better. Then attempt to make sense out of it all. The less conflicts of interest the sources have the better. But keep in mind all news comes through some type of filter.

I agree with the notion that you have to be discerning about media more than entirely avoiding it. It's good to keep in mind how the major media works, and if you don't know too much about that I advise you to look at some documentaries on google. You also have to heighten your awareness of propaganda and how preception mangagement is used. It's also good to seek alternative media sources.

Check out:

It's a good independent/libertarian think tank.

Typically drudgereport.com or timebomb2000.com (yeah, it's a nutjob forum, but they tend to post the news as it happens. they also like to predict the end of the world, but if you can ignore that, there's quite a lot of info on there. actually, it's the site that made me realize the housing bubble when I did, and made me look into Ron Paul more.)

I balance it out with fark.com and digg.com

NPR has some decent stuff on it and they are pretty balanced in NH. Not only is it one of the regular outlets for me (as I said above, I change news outlets every day to balance out the bias), but I also listen for the day that Diane Reams finally keels over on mic. ;) jk...

I enjoy FoxNews because it is entertaining to cross-reference the 'big stories' with other news sources to examine the biased spin. Fox tends to be pretty fast on breaking news, but inaccurate with the reporting. I don't think it is any coincidence that many of the news reporters on Fox are ex-military. I'll see it on Fox, then check CNN, MSNBC, then go to the AP breaking stories link off of Drudge. Google works pretty well after that to catch the important details that the MSM leaves out.

I usually use news.google.com customized for my taste and search terms such as Ron Paul, which reminds me I need to make a new section for gold and inflation.

I think I'll make a list of all the news sources listed here and bookmark them or include them in my customized google news somehow.
