A majority of Americans oppose the use of drone strikes on U.S. soil and against American citizens wherever they may be, according to a poll on Monday, but are perfectly fine with the program’s primary use — killing suspected terrorists abroad.
Sixty-five percent of Americans say the United States should use drones to launch airstrikes against suspected terrorists living abroad, according to a Gallup poll. Only 28 percent oppose the idea.
But when the suspected terrorist is a U.S. citizen living abroad, opposition jumps to 52 percent, with 41 percent support. Two-thirds oppose the use of drones to launch airstrikes on American soil. And 71 percent oppose targeting an American in the U.S.
While Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) recently drew attention for filibustering the nomination of CIA Director John Brennan until the Obama administration answered questions about the legality of drone strikes on U.S. soil, members of his party are far more likely to support the program. Thirty-one percent of Republicans support the use of drones to attack suspected terrorists living in the U.S., compared to 21 percent of Democrats. And half of the GOP is OK with attacking citizens suspected of terrorism abroad, compared to 41 percent of Democrats.
The poll was conducted on March 20 and 21. Of a sample of 1,020 adults, 502 were asked about using drone strikes abroad and 518 were asked about using drone strikes in the United States. The margin of error for both samples is plus or minus four percentage points.
