In the first photo, the people are on the Beverly CENTER side of La Cienega (West side, between Beverly Blvd. & 3rd St.), crossing toward the Beverly CONNECTION.

The second photo is from the Beverly Connection side of La Cienega, looking at the Beverly Center from the opposite end of the same crosswalk.

The Beverly Center is notorious for its limited pedestrian ingress/egress. It used to be even worse. Many of the ground-floor businesses are add-on's. WOULDN'T WANNA BE IN THERE DURING AN EARTHQUAKE was a common refrain back when it was built.
