Original reports said he was dead. via Google Translate:

Update: According to Arab media www.eltira.org, Bashar al-Assad would have been seriously wounded by gunfire last night Saturday, March 23 by his bodyguard but [???] is not dead. He is currently hospitalized, between life and death, Shami Hospital in Damascus which the streets were closed.

----

According to reports in the Arab press (and then republished in the Israeli press), information that journalists say they have "verified" the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad was killed this morning by one of his bodyguards. An important safety device has been set up at the hospital in Damascus.

The assassin Boucher Damascus would be his bodyguard Iran, a military officer named Mehdi Jakoby. He was in charge of presidential security and was "offered" by Tehran's ally Syria.

According to various sources, there are reports of heavy fighting in any armed Damascus. The roads leading to the hospital would be closed.

Syrian TV premises have been abandoned.

If this information had to be officially confirmed, it would be a victory for the Islamists who are fighting for the seizure of power in Syria. No one really knows what will happen tomorrow if Assad is actually dead. Is that Iran will take a step back? Russia will she see red at the loss of his best friend? What about China? And the United States who still pledged this week to put a term "in the coming days," the regime in Damascus, will they be strong enough to transmit the power to Syrian honest?

Translated from JSS News:

According to Arab media www.eltira.org , Bashar al-Assad would have been seriously wounded by gunfire last night Saturday, March 23 by his bodyguard but Iran is not dead. He is currently hospitalized, between life and death, Shami Hospital in Damascus which the streets were closed.

Last year one of Assad’s bodyguards blew himself up in a suicide blast in Damascus.

UPDATE: Wikipedia already reported his death:

http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2013/03/breaking-assad-shot-by-iranian-bodyguard-hospitalized-in-damascus/
the URL says he was shot by an Iranian body guard but the translation says 'but Iran is not dead' which maybe is supposed to say 'from Iran, but is not dead'?

dunno.

A rumor about the death of Syrian President Bashar Assad was massively shared on social media websites on Sunday, the French weekly magazine Le Point reported.

"News about Assad being shot dead by his Iranian bodyguard have not been confirmed yet,” the magazine said, revealing that the opposition's Free Syrian Army has denied such reports.

Noting that "tweets and Facebook comments helped in largely and rapidly disseminating the rumor”, Le Point remarked:

“Social media websites were the primary source of this rumor.”

The reported news shared that Assad was shot on Saturday and was transferred to a Damascus hospital, as roads were blocked and buildings surrounding the location were firmly seized by the Syrian army.

Meanwhile, other websites said:

“Israeli and Lebanese sources have confirmed the death of Syria's president.”

Shami Hospital in Damascus which the streets were closed.

From an Syrian in Damascus.

Bashar Al Assad have enough people he can trust from his own community to don't have to take an Iranian bodyguard. Also the rumor has being going for two days now.

I'm happy to put up if it is a rumor, but if we wait for MSM to report stuff, there are entire categories of information we will never have.

Sometimes you have to rely on the MSM to report on stuff like this. i.e AP, BBC have people in Damascus and if he's dead they will report it and it will be accurate.

Yeah, I'm waiting for a mainstream source to report it too. This is maybe the third time Twitter has declared Assad killed since 2011.

That's when I'll put up 'possibly rumor' or 'disputed' or something. but if Drudge has it and media in at least two countries are reporting it, even the fact that the rumor exists is news.

Drudge is linking to this report from JSS - who are they? I've never heard of them.

Drudge is not a news reporter and does not have anyone in Damascus. Unless AP, BBC etc. report it then it's not true and likely fabricated by political enemies.

Remember anyone can post anything on the internet or twitter...

I dont think Assad can win... You are going up against jihadist who will always have a fighters that will replenish its ranks and supplies from secret sources.

Have we won a war yet against guerilla/jihadist tactics? >.> If we havnt, I doubt Assad can.

Even if Assad can maintain the fight, it would cause financial problems for the government.

CIA Expands Role in Syria Fight
Agency Feeds Intelligence to Rebel Fighters, in Move That Deepens U.S. Involvement in Conflict

The Central Intelligence Agency is expanding its role in the campaign against the Syrian regime by feeding intelligence to select rebel fighters to use against government forces, current and former U.S. officials said.

The move is part of a U.S. effort to stem the rise of Islamist extremists in Syria by aiding secular forces, U.S. officials said, amid fears that the fall of President Bashar al-Assad would enable al Qaeda to flourish in Syria.

The expanded CIA role bolsters an effort by Western intelligence agencies to support the Syrian opposition with training in areas including weapons use, urban combat and countering spying by the regime.
