The “Kids' Zone” of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) website, part of the Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences, quotes communist leader Mao Zedong. The NCES is the“primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education in the U.S. and other nations.” Update: The quote has been removed.

Coming from the dude who waged war on the educated and eradicated many millions of them... Public education, what's not to love?

This outrages conservatives, but the communist public education system doesn't outrage them.

This asshole was responsible for the extermination of several of my (great) grand-aunts/uncles. Glad my kids are not in the ridiculous public education system.

Hmm. A quote about learning and teaching others being good is considered bad for some reason?

It's like quoting satan when he was telling Jesus to strive for more as if it was a good thing.

They probably could have chosen one of the other thousands of quotes about education.

Hitler wasn't all bad either, was he Zip?! People shouldn't hesitate to quote him either just because he was a mass murderer.

The thing about Mao is that in addition to being on every denomination of Chinese money and having been responsible for some of the greatest crimes against humanity in history, is that he's extremely quotable. Catchphrases like "political power grows from the barrel of a gun" or "a revolution is not a dinner party" really stick with you. And the particular quote that NCES is aiming for here is good too, but they've clearly mangled it. Mao must have meant that we should be insatiable in learning and tireless in teaching. Otherwise it's crazy advice (http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/03/22/mao_zedong_quote_at_department_of_education.html).

Sounds about right for the department of miseducation.

Mao did teach some 70 million people a lesson.

I guess the DOE can pick this quote next time.

Education must provide the opportunities for self-fulfillment; it can at best provide a rich and challenging environment for the individual to explore, in his own way

And after the Hitler quote they can complete the trifecta for you with this:

'We don't let them have ideas. Why would we let them have guns?'--Joseph Stalin

I believe we all got something worthwhile to say. We are only here on earth for so long so why not chat it up and try to figure some stuff out?

I don't know what's more scary, the DoE quoting Mao or some "teacher" defending him and the quote.

I can think of two things more frightening than those. One, nobody at the ED is educated enough to know the difference between 'satiable' and insatiable'. Perhaps these people are all ignorant enough to think them as interchangeable as 'flammable' and 'inflammable'? Two, you have to call it ED, because we have so many bureaus that DoE is something completely different (specifically, the Department of Energy).

I don't see this (or any quote at all) on the actual site - either it was removed, or someone is trolling with Photoshop

"The Kids' Zone website hosted by the National Center of Education Statistics earlier today featured a poorly chosen quote, intended to highlight the importance of teaching and learning, in the 'Quote of the Day' feature. This feature, which automatically generates one education-related quote per day from a database of quotes last updated in 2007, has been temporarily suspended pending a review of the database's contents."

It was replaced by an Abraham Lincoln quote.
