Rand: "A message for the president. A message that is loud and clear. A message that doesn't mince words".
Dude from audience: "Don't drone me bro!"

Good speech although I don't like the 17% income tax idea even though I did back in the 90s. Rather move to a national sales tax of 10% over an income tax of 17%. This way the poor and dependent end up paying their fair share for the time being since they suck much of the money out of government. Also, a sales tax will reach the $2 trillion underground economy and no more filing required in April. IRS could be cut by 90%...sorry to the KBG agents but not really lol.

Yeah I would prefer for Rand to jump on the Fair Tax bandwagon instead of the flat tax. There is still time to formulate official policy.

I also favor a 5-10% federal sales tax. But I'm for anything that lowers and simplifies taxes.

The Fair Tax is a trap. You will end up with both a Fair Tax and an Income Tax. The constitution is clear that it has to be an income tax unless it is repealed which is not happening.

it's impossible when its right there in the constitution. The IRS is just an agency that collects the tax that's in the constitution so unless that amendment can be repealed there's no point in ending the IRS.

The best thing to do if your president is to do what Rand wants: to institute a flat tax at lowest rate possible during your tenure.

Fair taxes also get labeled (sometimes unfairly) as overly regressive. We can't afford that with our messaging.

Don't those living under the poverty level get a rebate check under the Fair Tax?

supermario21
03-14-2013, 05:40 PM
Yeah, they usually do. Huckabee pushed that in his Fairtax plan. Of course it didn't help that Cain really couldn't spell out his sales tax which really set the overall movement back IMO.

As I said a fair tax/sales tax is stupid. The constitution is clear. It says Income Tax. So unless you want to end up with a National Sales Tax and an Income Tax and thus more taxes then they should drop it. Make the Income Tax flat unless you can repeal it entirely which you can't.

True, the prerequisite is to repeal the 16th amendment. But that doesn't make the fair tax stupid.

That's stupid when we have such an enormous debt.

No I don't want to raise rates but I would like increased revenue using the Reagan-Kennedy growth model.

I really think this idea, similar to Friedman's negative income tax, would be a good way to cut out the bloated beauocracy and start the transition out of the welfare state.

It does because you're not going to be able to do a) to pull off b).

So the only credible thing an incoming president can do is rather than waste years and years pushing to repeal the 16th is to institute a flat Income Tax immediately and for his entire tenure and hope it sparks economic growth and that people will want to keep it later.

at the 17 minute mark, Rand Paul lays out the case for liberty... "Our party is encumbered by an inconsistent approach to liberty" "The New GOP must embrace liberty in both the economic, and the personal sphere."

Here it is. Rand has called the GOP out on it's social issues.

I swear I read that it was something like $250/week if you're under the poverty line. We basically have something similar to this now, except all the funds get sloshed around in bureaucracy like you said. Payments are in the form of social programs, welfare, and various other things instead of direct payment.

If it was possible to get the rebate to replace all of this other welfare, we could reduce spending dramatically, which would also allow for the sales tax rate to be lowered accordingly.

Here is the relevant clip from Free To Choose where they discuss it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnqXllfQ3xk

Sowell points out that if you calculate all of the welfare money spent, each family should be getting $32,000 (1980), which I adjusted for inflation making it 87,000 dollars in today's terms. So the bureaucracy is clearly sucking up a ton of money, and probably much more now than before.

The thing that needs to be formulated is the work incentive. I don't think Friedman included that (he may have, I haven't read an actual working paper of his on the subject), but I never heard him mention it in the videos and articles I have read.

Here is some good info from the Fair Tax blog: The Fair Tax vs. Negative Income Tax

Kind of tepid crowd response until about 9 minutes in. Yeah, his metering / rhythm was off a bit, but the speech including content was great. I think maybe the audience wasn't as interested in the subject matter? Remember CFL didn't make a huge push to turn people out so the room was not full of liberty movement supporters.

Also, I give Rand credit for not just serving up traditional conservative red meat. To be talking about drones, civil liberties, freedom, 4th amendment, that's hard to rile up a bunch of people not really aware of all of that, especially when compared to Rubio who spewed nonsense like "America! we don't need to change!"
