HERKIMER COUNTY —

State police now say at least six people were shot, four fatally, in a Herkimer County shooting spree that crossed town lines.

State police PIO Jack Keller says two people were fatally shot at Gaffey's car wash on Mohawk Street in Herkimer and two more were fatally shot on South Washington Street in Mohawk. At least two others were injured, but Keller could not say at which location.

The suspect reportedly used a long gun for the shootings. He had not been apprehended as of 10:45 a.m.

Here they come. Going to try and ban all bolt action rifles. They will label them all sniper rifles. I will have to hold onto my .270 a little bit longer. Maybe I can get more cash for it.

"Long gun?" Do they mean a long-rifle which can come in any form including the dreaded "assault weapon" kind? The gungrabbing crowd talks many times as if they know nothing about guns, which really hurts them IMO. Of course, I'm not complaining. I see Piers Morgan has taken to twitter, let's see how long it takes him to say Cuomo hasn't gone far enough!

Well I mean come on, at that age if you were going to do something like this, it would have already happened. At that point, you stop complaining and get your affairs in order for what may come. Of course I realize there is an exception to any rule, but I know a ton of old timers that are pissed off to all hell with how things are these days, and not one of em would just 'snap'.

Now, what they would do is fight back in defense against the state machinery if absolutely necessary.

Search for shooter continues after 4 killed, 2 injured in Herkimer Co.
http://www.uticaod.com/features/x930813837/2-people-reportedly-shot-at-Herkimer-car-wash

HERKIMER COUNTY —

Police have not yet apprehended the shooter responsible for killing four people and injuring two others in Herkimer and Mohawk today.

Swat teams and a police helicopter converged on Freddy's Jewelers, located next to Glory Days, on Main Street in Herkimer, in the late morning, and it appeared police believed the suspect was in the building. However, Mohawk officials seemed to think the suspect was still on foot somewhere, and other reports suggested he may have been picked up by a taxi.

State police PIO Jack Keller said two people were fatally shot at Gaffey's car wash on Mohawk Street in Herkimer and two more were fatally shot in Mohawk. At least two others were injured, but Keller could not say at which location. It appears the Mohawk shootings occurred at John's Barbershop, which is located on West Main Street, around the corner from South Washington Street.

Jason Ackler, 39, of Ilion said his best friend’s father was among the people shot in the barber shop. His condition was unknown.

“I think this guy is trying to prove a point,” he said. “It definitely seems like he knew what he was doing.”

Police approached a couple older men who were among the people gathered at the scene in Herkimer. Because they matched the suspect's identification, police checked their IDs.

Police believe the suspect set his home in Mohawk on fire before heading to the barber shop near his home. Several people were shot there and two people were killed. He then headed to the car wash.

The suspect reportedly used a long gun for the shootings. He had not been apprehended as of 11:45 a.m. There were some reports that he may have worked at Gaffey's.

Firefighters battled the structure fire at an apartment building at 32 S. Washington St. in Mohawk from sometime around 9:30 a.m. until shortly before 11 a.m. Officials said it began in the rear of the building, but the cause is still under investigation.

Reports indicate the suspect lived in that building; police were seen taking about half a dozen long guns from the residence shortly before 11 a.m. but would not confirm if they belonged to the suspect.

Several state police officials and Herkimer police Chief Joseph Malone also were in front of the car wash in Herkimer. The area was surrounded by yellow police tape . A couple of officers are armed with shotguns.

Herkimer, Mohawk, Ilion, Frankfort and Dolgeville schools, Herkimer BOCES and HCCC were placed on lockdown at about 10 a.m., school officials said. The Herkimer superintendent said the move was recommended by village police. Classes were continuing as normal, but school officials were monitoring the entrances.

Don Heath Jr., 36, of Mohawk said his daughter, who is in seventh grade in Mohawk, is nervous because the school is on lockdown.

“What’s going on today in the Mohawk Valley is very intense," he said. "Something like this never happens around here so this is a scary thing.”

Police initially were searching for a maroon vehicle in connection with the shootings. That vehicle later was found in Herkimer.

Reports indicate police are searching for a 50- to 60-year-old slender white male, about 5-foot-11, with white hair and a white beard, last seen wearing a flannel shirt.

HERKIMER, N.Y. — A man opened fire at a car wash and a barbershop a mile away Wednesday morning, killing four people and wounding at least two others, police said, and the suspect was being sought.

State police told local media outlets a man shot and killed two unidentified people Wednesday morning at Gaffey's Fast Lube in the village of Herkimer. Two others were killed at John's Barber Shop in the village of Mohawk. They said a total of six people had been shot.

The two villages are about 65 miles east of Syracuse, on opposite sides of the Mohawk River in a region known as the Mohawk Valley.

Herkimer Village police would only say that there was a shooting and a manhunt.

Herkimer County Community College and local schools were on lockdown.

Amanda Viscomi, Herkimer's acting clerk-treasurer for the village of 7,700, told The Associated Press the shooting at Gaffey's happened a few blocks from village hall. She said she was told the shooter was at large and that state police, sheriff's deputies and other police were swarming the area.

"Everybody's on lockdown, all the schools, the college, the village," Viscomi said. "It's very, very scary."

The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported ( http://bit.ly/WnbdK0) that police were seen removing about half a dozen long guns from an apartment building in Mohawk where a fire had broken out around 9:30 a.m. The building is around the corner from the barbershop.

Herkimer Village police would only say that there was a shooting and a manhunt.

Herkimer County Community College and local schools were on lockdown. The college sent an automated cellphone alert around 10:40 a.m., telling students and staff that there was an "active shooter" in the area. The message identified the gunman as a man in his 60s, with a white beard and driving a red Jeep Cherokee. A text alert a few minutes later said the campus was on lockdown. Another alert advised people to remain inside buildings until further notice.

Herkimer is named for the German immigrant family that settled in the western Mohawk Valley in the 1720s. The economically distressed villages are two miles away from Ilion, where a 2-century-old Remington Arms gun plant is a major employer.

OK, this is getting REALLY WEIRD!
This came out 7 hours ago - BEFORE the shootings!
Keep in mind that this is a really small county of about 7,000 people and DHS gifted them about $10 a person... Lets see, country of 300 Million people... that would be about 3 Billion if distributed evenly... What is DHS's budget, anyway?

Herkimer County opts for more ‘robust’ alert system
http://www.uticaod.com/latestnews/x930813208/Herkimer-County-opts-for-more-robust-alert-system

If a natural disaster or countywide emergency strikes, Herkimer County residents soon will have the option to be notified by a text message, email or even a cell phone call.

The Herkimer County Legislature recently approved using a portion of a $75,468 Homeland Security Grant for a more “robust” emergency notification system, rather than the free, state-provided system called NY-ALERT.

County Emergency Services Director Robert Vandawalker said they chose the private system from California-based Everbridge because it was more extensive.

“New York Alert is not robust enough compared to this system,” he said. “There’s actually nine different ways that a person, when they sign up, they can be notified. This is a subscription-based system.”

The program will cost about roughly $45,000, Vandawalker said, for a two-year contract as well as a one-time start up fee.

Vandawalker said the system not only provides emergency alerts, but can be used for different departments and government agencies to alert employees of building closures and meeting notices. It also can be used for conference calling, he said.

The new system will be able to reach individuals who use their cell phone as their primary contact, Vandawalker said. The county had been working off of a reverse 911 system that was only reaching landlines in the event of an emergency.

The county Emergency Services receives more than 16,000 emergency calls from cellphones compared to about 5,000 from landline calls.

With the new system, county residents will be able to sign up for what geographical area they want notifications from, the types of incidents and how they’ll be notified, Vandawalker said.

Ilion Police Chief Tim Parisi said he’s hoping to implement the system for his department’s personnel.

“We would be able to make notification to our personnel more streamlined rather than picking up the phone to call people,” he said, adding that he’d like to use it for notification to residents as well.

In Oneida County, Emergency Services Deputy Director Gerald Pedersen said they used to use a private system, but switched to the NY-ALERT to save money.

“For what we’re using it for, for us, it really came down to doing the same thing and not costing us anything,” he said.

He added that the county also utilizes the National Weather Service, local media and cellphone towers to broadcast alerts.

While the Homeland Security grant covers the contract with Everbridge for two years, Vandawalker said he’d have to explore funding after that.

Homeland Security grants previously have been used to fund a consolidation study among six county fire departments as well as to purchase radios, holders and microphones for some police departments in the past.

Republican Legislator Bruce Weakley said he wasn’t aware of NY-ALERT and qualified his vote during a recent legislature meeting by stating that his vote only was for the two years covered by the grant.

“I probably would not vote for it unless it’s funded by another grant,” he later said. “I think we should definitely look into the state system.”

Vincent Bono, chairman of the Herkimer County legislature, said if the county had to fund some of the expense, he doesn’t anticipate it costing much.

“As far as bit costs, I don’t think it’s a huge cost,” he said. “For public safety, it’s worth it.”

Wow. How convenient for their(Obama admin/anti gun) narrative. I was just wondering before I drifted off last night during my mental file dump when the next shooting of multiples of white people in a "it never happens here/sleepy quiet type of town" would occur.....

The Remington Factory 2 miles up the road was a touch I didn't add in my possible scenario, lol.

That is beyond odd, considering all the other "coincidences" in the last several shootings...I'll watch as this one goes on

Police ID fatal shooting suspect as Kurt Myers of Mohawk
http://www.uticaod.com/m/top/x930813837/2-people-reportedly-shot-at-Herkimer-car-wash

HERKIMER COUNTY —

Mohawk police have identified the man suspected of fatally shooting six and wounding two others as 64-year-old Kurt Myers of Mohawk.

Police have not yet apprehended Myers. State police expect to hold a news conference at the Herkimer barracks within the hour. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico will be in attendance, police said.

Police said they consider Myers "armed and extremely dangerous." Residents are advised to stay indoors and to call 911 if they see him. Police also said they are "familiar" with Myers, but could not comment on any criminal record he may have.

Myers is suspected of fatally shooting four people -- two at Gaffey's car wash on Mohawk Street in Herkimer and two at John's Barbershop on West Main Street in Mohawk. Two others were shot and injured, state police PIO Jack Keller said.

Following the shootings, reported sightings of Myers were rampant, with SWAT teams and a police helicopter converging on Weisser's Jewelers in Herkimer after one such report came from that area. Other reports suggested he was on foot in Mohawk or had been picked up by a white taxi.

The Herkimer Police Department denied rumors that there was a third shooting site at either the Herkimer Post Office or a second barber shop.

Jason Ackler, 39, of Ilion said his best friend’s father was among the people shot at John's Barber Shop in Mohawk. His condition was unknown.

“I think this guy is trying to prove a point,” he said. “It definitely seems like he knew what he was doing.”

Some Herkimer businesses on lock down
http://www.uticaod.com/news/x171160543/Some-Herkimer-businesses-on-lock-down

HERKIMER —

Many businesses on North Main Street were on lock down Wednesday as police swarmed the streets following a fatal shooting spree that killed four and wounded two people in Herkimer and Mohawk.

“There are just police all over the place,” Weisser’s Jewelers owner Freddy Weisser said, adding that there was a group of people across the street at the Frank J. Basloe Library watching the scene.

While some reports stated that the 64-year-old suspect Kurt Myers, of Mohawk, was holed up inside of the jeweler’s, Weisser said that was not true.

“(The suspect) ditched his car behind my building,” he said.

Weisser said police were looking through his camera footage.

Meanwhile down the street, barber Al Moretti, owner of Moretti’s Barber Shop, said he had heard that a fellow barber in Mohawk had been shot.

“He’s a barber, I’m a barber,” he said. “We were just talking on Monday.”

Moretti said that he had locked himself in his barber shop that he’s cut hair for about 50 years.

“I can’t believe what happened in a small town like Herkimer. It’s scary,” he said. “I’ve never heard of this since I’ve been on this street.”

MOHAWK —

Harry Montgomery Sr. of Mohawk was at John’s Barber Shop Wednesday morning for a haircut when he was fatally shot, said his son, Harry Montgomery Jr.

“My sister was at the bank, cashing a check when she heard all the commotion,” he said. “She came out to see what was going on and found out it was Dad who got shot.”

He has been frustrated by the lack of information from police, Montgomery said from across the street from the barber shop.

“They told us he’s been shot,” he said. “That’s all the cops have told us.”

Police said two people were killed at the barber shop; two others were killed at a car wash in Herkimer. Two others were injured during the shootings, police said, but it’s unclear where they were when they were shot.

Manhunt follows slayings in Herkimer County
http://www.leaderherald.com/page/content.detail/id/554702/Manhunt-follows-slayings-in-Herkimer-County.html?nav=5011

(Editor's note: This story is breaking and will be updated as more details become available.)

HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) - A man opened fire at a car wash and a barbershop a mile apart this morning, killing four people and wounding at least two others, and a 64-year-old suspect was being sought, police said.

The students and staff at Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School and other schools in the Herkimer BOCES region are under a security lockdown today while police search for the suspect, O-E Business Administrator Karen Mettler told The Leader-Herald today. She said classes were being conducted as normal, but as a safety precaution, no one is being allowed to enter or leave the school without being cleared by authorities.

Authorities were looking for Kurt Meyers, said Joseph Malone, the police chief for Herkimer and Mohawk. Officials say guns and ammunition were found inside his Mohawk apartment after emergency crews were sent to a fire there Wednesday morning.

Soon after, two people were fatally shot and two others wounded at John's Barber Shop, around the corner from the apartment, police said. The second shooting happened about a mile away in Herkimer, where two people were killed at Gaffey's Fast Lube and Car Wash, authorities said.

Officials said Meyers remained at large this afternoon.

Late this morning, police SWAT teams and a helicopter converged on a jewelry store in Herkimer.

The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported that police were focusing on Freddy's Jewelers on Main Street, near the car wash and oil change business. The newspaper reported that officials in Mohawk, however, seemed to think the suspect was still on foot somewhere. Other reports suggested he may have been picked up by a taxi.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the head of the state police were on their way to the area and were expected to brief the media later in the day.

It gets weirder... This is from yesterday...

Could an automaker soon move in to Herkimer County?
http://www.wktv.com/news/local/Could-an-automaker-soon-move-in-to-Herkimer-County-197449261.html

FRANKFORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - Frankfort Mayor Frank Moracco says he has been talking with officials from an automaker which is interested in building a plant at the old Union Tools site in the Village.

Right now, Moracco will not release any details as to which automaker that is, he has been in contact with.

Tuesday morning, Moracco organized a meeting at the Frankfort Village Hall to get an update on the status of the cleanup of the site which sits on Main St..

The meeting included a number of officials from the New York State Department of Conservation as well as the State Department of Health and the attorney for the owners of the site, Ames True Temper out of Indiana.

The cleanup is being paid for by the owners.

You may recall, this is the same site that was being cleaned up last year, when in August, twelve of the buildings on the site caught fire.

That fire was ruled accidental.

Mayor Moracco says the automaker was looking to begin building on the site in the next several months, but during the Tuesday morning meeting, DEC officials told him the earliest the entire site could be cleaned up would be about two years from now.

There was talk of trying to clean up a 2 to 3 acre portion of the 32 acre site so that section could be used for some immediate development, but DEC officials say that cleanup could take longer than the next several months, and if a section were to be cleaned, that portion would still be considered contaminated until the entire site was cleaned up.

Moracco says a company looking to develop a large plant would not locate to a site that is deemed contaminated.

So now, Moracco says he will talk with the automaker and point them in the direction of other marketable sites within Herkimer County.

He does say one of the draws of the automaker to Frankfort is that the village has its own municipal electric.

He says unfortunately there just isn't much other available land in the village.

Moracco says he's not sure whether the automaker would be willing to move to another municipality in Herkimer County which doesn't have its own municipal electric, but he will do everything he can to get them to consider it.

A far as the old Union tools site, the attorney for its current owner says demolition of the two remaining buildings left on the site will begin on March 25th.

Once demolition is complete, the DEC will begin to install sample wells used to collect ground water as well as begin other data collection.

Once the testing is complete, a timeline and method of cleanup of the site will be made.

But again, if all goes well, the testing remediation plan could be complete in the spring of 2014.

Cleanup could begin soon after that, and could be complete as early as the spring of 2015.

Local shop owner heard gunshots during Herkimer car wash homicide
http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2013/03/local_shop_owner_heard_gunshot.html

Herkimer, NY -- The owner of a Herkimer electronics store said a quiet morning was shattered when five gunshots rang out from the office of Gaffey's car wash and oil change across the street.

"It was just a regular morning until the shots rang out," said Greg Beasley. "Then it got really busy real quick."

Across the street, he saw people running out a back door of the office at Gaffey's, located at the corner of Mohawk Street and Second Avenue in the center of the village.

Authorities say four people were killed and two injured in two shootings this morning in Herkimer County. The other happened at a barber shop nearby.

The shooting happened in the front office of the business, next to the car bays where people can get their oil changed, Beasley said. The car wash is in a separate building behind the office.

Within minutes, roughly 20 police cars swarmed the scene, Beasley said. There were state police, Herkimer County sheriff's deputies and village police at the scene.

Beasley said he stayed inside his business, across Mohawk Street. He could hear a helicopter circling overhead.

As of 1:15 p.m., the street in front of his store remained closed.

Beasley said the violence happened suddenly; he heard no commotion before the gunshots.

"“It’s horrific and unbelievable something like that could happen,” he said.

http://rochester.ynn.com/content/top_stories/647138/four-dead-in-herkimer-county-shootings/

Four people are dead and two injured after two related shootings in Herkimer County, between Syracuse and Albany.

Police have identified the suspect as Kurt Myers, 64. They are passing flyers out to residents in the area with his picture displayed.

State Police say Myers shot and killed two people around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at a car wash in Herkimer. A short time later, State Police say he shot and killed two more people on South Washington Street in the village of Mohawk.

State Police say they are still looking for Myers, but there is a large standoff on Main Street in Herkimer. A man at the scene tells us that his child and others are in the building that police have surrounded. SWAT teams and dozens of police vehicles are on the scene as well.

A number of schools are on lockdown as a precaution.

Oh and local LE are 'familiar' with Myers? And by that do they mean the local yokel that doesn't fit into a one sized fits all container? The one bucking their authority?

Jason Ackler, 39, of Ilion said his best friend’s father was among the people shot at John's Barber Shop in Mohawk. His condition was unknown.

“I think this guy is trying to prove a point,” he said. “It definitely seems like he knew what he was doing.”

He's clearly such an expert, he should be quoted in news stories. He has the ability to read the mind of the shooter.

Update on school dismissals after Herkimer County shootings
http://www.herkimertelegram.com/topstories/x898148257/Update-on-school-dismissals-after-Herkimer-County-shootings

Herkimer, N.Y. —

Schools in the Herkimer County area outside of Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk will be dismissed as usual Wednesday
Little Falls is expecting to have a partial dismissal.
The following school districts in the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES region are scheduled for regular dismissal: Dolgeville; Oppenheim-Ephratah; Frankfort-Schuyler; Owen D. Young; Richfield Springs; Mount Markham; Poland and West Canada Valley.
Little Falls will have a regular dismissal time, but only for rural students.
Little Falls police are currently asking students who live in the city be held at the school beyond regular dismissal.
Students at the Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk school districts are currently scheduled to be held in school beyond regular dismissal time.
Students from those schools who attend Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton Otsego BOCES also will be held at the BOCES beyond normal dismissal.
“All of the students are safe, and classes have been going on as usual” said Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua in a news release. “We’re prepared to house students comfortably at the BOCES for as long as needed.”
Further updates will be provided as soon as they are available.
“We’re keeping the kids in a safe environment,” said Vivacqua. “Parents are strongly encouraged not to come to the schools at this time because it would just add to the hectic situation.”
The open house originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Herkimer BOCES will be postponed to a future date to be determined.

Authorities surround Glory Days in Herkimer, battering ram used
http://www.wktv.com/news/local/Authorities-surround-Glory-Days-in-Herkimer-battering-ram-used-197835611.html

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Authorities are swarming the former location of the bar Glory Days in the Village of Herkimer as the investigation continues into the fatal shooting of four people in Herkimer County on Wednesday morning.

A large law enforcement presence was on North Main Street Wednesday afternoon, as authorities communicated with someone inside the former Glory Days bar. At one point, a large battering ram was being used by SWAT teams to make their way inside the building. However, at the time, authorities were still not saying whether or not the person they were communicating with inside was Kurt Myers, the man suspected of killing four people Wednesday morning.

At one point, there was speculation that a suspect or suspects had made their way into the old Billings School on North Washington Street, one block over from North Main Street.

Authorities say Kurt Myers, 64, of Mohawk intentionally set fire to his residence on South Washington Street in Mohawk before going to John's Barber Shop on Main Street in Mohawk and shooting four people, killing two. Myers then allegedly went to Gaffey's Car Wash on Mohawk Street in Herkimer where he shot and killed two people before fleeing the scene in a maroon-colored Jeep with a black top. That vehicle was later found by police in Herkimer, but Myers was not inside.

State Police were expected to hold a joint news conference with Governor Andrew Cuomo Wednesday afternoon, but a time has not been set for that announcement.

Myers was not believed to be in custody shortly before 3 p.m.

Suspect drove through library parking lot, park
http://www.herkimertelegram.com/topstories/x1522337813/Suspect-drove-through-library-parking-lot-park

Herkimer, N.Y. —

The suspect in Wednesday’s shootings in Mohawk and Herkimer drove right through the Frank J. Basloe Public Library parking lot, according to Lesley Paul, library director.
She said the vehicle came into the parking lot from North Prospect Street and drove around the lot erratically and then drove through the park area in front of the library entrance. The vehicle then stopped in front of the library and continued on to cross North Main Street and drove into the alley between the buildings there where it was abandoned.
“There was a man sitting on one of the park benches right in front of the library,” Paul said. “Then we were seeing more and more armed officers coming with guns drawn and we were told to go on lock down,” said Paul.
People in some nearby apartments were told to evacuate, she said and came into the library to seek shelter, but a little while later she was told to evacuate the library
She was waiting behind police tape in the rear of the library park with others who were watching the scene across the street.
“Who goes on a shooting spree in this area,” she said. “I think that’s what people around here are all asking.”
She added, “The man on the park bench was extremely fortunate.”
Dan Williams, who was watching the scene from the corner of North Main and Green streets, said he lives near Gaffey’s and woke up this morning to phone calls from people checking to make sure he was safe. When he looked outside, he said, the whole block around Stewart’s was roped off.
“I stayed inside for awhile,” he said. “There are a lot of alleyways around there.”
Williams said he talked to friends who live in apartment buildings on North Main Street and heard they had been ordered to stay inside. He walked downtown to seek what was going on and was staying in touch with his friend’s by cell phone.

Districts still on lockdown, may not release students at dismissal
http://www.herkimertelegram.com/topstories/x898148173/Districts-still-on-lockdown-may-not-release-students-at-dismissal

Herkimer, N.Y. —

Numerous school districts throughout the area are on lockdown as a safety precaution to the shooting incident in Herkimer and Mohawk Wednesday.
Several parents have stated they are nervous as some districts say they may not release students at dismissal.
With 25 minutes to dismissal at about 2 p.m. Susan Loomis, of Ilion, is waiting to see whether or not she can pick up her fifth grader, Mark, from Barringer Road Elementary School. Though she’s on the Ilion district’s automated phone alert she said she hasn’t received anything today.
“I’m hoping at this point that they’re oblivious and not scared,” she said about the students. “I’m just kind of waiting with bated breath watching TV or online to see if I can go get my son.”
Ilion schools will also keep students past dismissal with no one allowed to enter or exit the buildings unless otherwise told it was safe by police, according to officials.
Districts including Ilion and Herkimer remain on lockdown since 10 a.m. Wednesday and will continue to do so until told it’s safe by police, said Herkimer interim Superintendent Theodore Kawryga. “Our next decision unless we get a call from police is what we’re going to do at closing time,” he said.
At this point the district will keep students past dismissal, Kawryga said. “They’re safe here. We’re not sure what’s going on out there,” he said.
Kawryga said the move was recommended by village police. Classes were continuing as normal, but school officials were monitoring the entrances.
Along with Herkimer, districts on lockdown include Little Falls, Poland, Mohawk, Ilion, Frankfort, Utica, New Hartford, Dolgeville, Herkimer BOCES and Herkimer County Community College.
They were placed on lockdown at about 10 a.m., school officials said.
Wendy Chukwuonye, of Ilion, has a son who is a junior at Ilion High School and a daughter in third grade at Barringer Road Elementary School.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” she said. “I have no idea if they’re going to release the kids as scheduled. I’m just waiting to hear.”
Her son, Jordan Floyd, woke up late this morning and received a text from a friend while Chukwuonye was driving him to school saying it was on lockdown.
Chukwuonye called the school and was told not to bring him in, she said. She is still waiting to hear whether or not she can pick up her daughter.
HCCC remains on a shelter in place situation, said public relations director Rebecca Ruffing. Students and faculty are now being allowed to leave their classrooms, but must stay inside the buildings and are not allowed to leave, she said.
The college notified staff and students via New York Alert System which sends out faxes, emails, texts and phone calls to subscribers, Ruffing said.
New Hartford Superintendent Robert Nole said individuals with appointments are being allowed into its school buildings, and there will be an extra police presence at all the schools at the end of the day.
“We are being extra vigilant,” he said. “We’re in close contact with the New Hartford Police Department.”

Witnesses Say Shots Have Been Fired in Herkimer; Governor to Address Shooting Incidents That Killed 4
http://www.fox44abc22yourvoice.com/story/21630927/witnesses-say-shots-have-been-fired-in-herkimer-governor-to-address-shooting-incidents-that-killed-4

HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -

Police have released information on a suspect after two separate shootings on Wednesday morning. Initial reports indicated that four people were killed.

Police say they are looking for 64-year-old Kurt Myers. Police say residents should not approach Myers and that they should remain indoors.

Police believe he is armed and dangerous.

They have described Myers as a 5-foot-11 man with white hair and a white beard.

NewsChannel 9 reporter Jennifer Sanders said that two helicopters have been circling a location on Main Street in Herkimer. Four blocks are cordoned off by police in the area.

She added that witnesses said they hear approximately five gunshots in the area shortly after 1:30 p.m.

NewsChannel 9 reporter Leigh Isaacson reports that police and SWAT teams converged on a jewelry store on North Main Street in the village of Herkimer.

She said State Police scheduled a press conference New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo at the Herkimer State Police barracks at 2 p.m.

Cuomo arrived at the barracks and was briefed, but left with multiple police agencies to a location in Herkimer.

Police have not indicated whether a suspect has been taken into custody.

WUTR reports that Herkimer County Community College, Herkimer Central School District schools, Mohawk Central School District schools, and Herkimer BOCES are on lockdown.

In addition, reports indicate that the suspect has fled in a red jeep with a black top.

State Police say there are two scenes in the county - one at a car wash in the village of Herkimer and one in the village of Mohawk.

In addition, WUTR reports that a fire erupted on South Washington Street in Mohawk. State Police have not indicated that the fire is connected to the shootings.

Should I go ahead and call myself in as a suspicious person?

“When I saw his picture, I just got sick to my stomach,” she said while outside the state police barracks in Herkimer waiting for a news conference to begin. “It could have been here. It could have been us.”

And who is to thank for the fact that stupid and cowardly people such as her were rendered incapable of mounting a credible defense against such people?

Sorry Michele honey, I have no sympathy for you because you and all your neighbors shirked it big time when you allowed the almighty and vainglorious state to effectively de-ball every last one of you. Now drink the wine gone bitter and let us not hear no complaint from you or your kind again.

The killings took place at a carwash and a barbershop in Herkimer County.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/13/4-killed-shooting-herkimer-county-new-york-mohawk-herkimer/1984367/

HERKIMER, N.Y. — Police Wednesday evening were still surrounding the man suspected of killing four men and wounding two others in a morning shooting spree in two Upstate New York villages.

SWAT officers, snipers and an armored vehicle had zeroed in on shops along the main street of Herkimer, about 65 miles east of Syracuse in the historic region known as the Mohawk Valley. Witnesses said police had been communicating with the suspect, Kurt Myers, 64, of nearby Mohawk.

Myers is wanted for killing two men and wounding two others at John's Barber Shop, around the corner from his home, then driving across the Mohawk River and gunning down two more men at Gaffney's Car Wash in Herkimer. Officers later found hIs Jeep abandoned.

Police said Myers began the day by setting fire to his apartment about 9:30 a.m. Firefighters quickly put out the fire. Investigators found several weapons and ammunition inside.

Joseph Malone, chief of police for the two villages, described Myers as "armed and extremely dangerous."

At a 5 p.m. news conference, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there was "no apparent, rational motive, to the best of our knowledge at this time, to provoke these attacks."

"This is truly an inexplicable situation," he said.

Police identified the men slain at the barbershop as Harry Montgomery, 68, of Mohawk, and Michael Rancier, 57, of Herkimer.

The carwash victims were identified as employee Thomas Stefka, in his 60s, and Michael Renshaw, in his 40s, a 20-year veteran of the New York State Department of Corrections.

The barbershop owner, John Seymour, and a customer, Dan Haslauer, were listed in critical condition at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica.

New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said SWAT teams and other officers were fired on from an abandoned building on North Main Street in Herkimer about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

WKTV reported that police had surrounded a shuttered bar, Glory Days Food and Spirits, and were using a battering ram. The station said police were communicating with someone inside.

A resident told the Associated Press that he overhead police trying to coax Myers into coming out of an adjacent building.

A server at another bar who has waited on Myers for a decade described him as a loner who was pleasant to staff but "very jittery and nervous."

"He just wasn't a people person, and he would never talk to anyone else," Michele Mlinar told the Utica Observer-Dispatch.

A heavy presence of state and local police, including a police helicopter, brought the village of 10,000 to a standstill.

Local schools were locked down, and Herkimer County Community College warned students not to come to campus. Those who are there were told to "shelter in place until further notice," according to the college's website.

Troopers carefully checked cars leaving the area on the county's main highway, but were also alert to the possibility that the suspect was on foot after abandoning the maroon vehicle spotted at the site of both shootings.

At one point in the afternoon search, as onlookers crowded the blocked off, downtown area, witnesses heard at least one loud "bang" near Weisser's Jewelers on North Main Street in Herkimer, followed quickly by what sounded like gunfire.

SWAT officers with guns pointed gathered outside the jewelry store.

"It's just a laid-back town, really," said 20-year-old Zack Burks, who was among those who heard gunfire. "It's a college town. You've got your occasional drama that goes on, but nothing like this at all."

Outside the state police barracks, Mlinar said she "got sick to my stomach" when she saw Myers' picture. "It could have been here. It could have been us," she told the Utica newspaper.

Greg Beasley, 70, who owns an electronics store in downtown Herkimer, said the afternoon gunshots "got my attention."

"I can throw a rock and hit the building over there, so those gunshots, I was very attentive and on guard," he said.

"It's amazing they haven't caught them because we got half the police force of New York State right in our little village," Beasley said.

The mid-morning killings occurred not long after a fire broke out at Myers' apartment building in Mohawk. The Associated Press said that guns and ammunition were found inside Myers' apartment.

"It's chaotic. There's been a lot of tragedy and death," said Tom Noddings, 63, owner of Mohawk Valley Antiques, which is across the street from the barbershop where the shootings took place.

"There are people all over the place, and there's so much rumor going around about — he's here, he's there, he's been there — it's just crazy."

"It's very unusual for our small community to have such a horrific situation happen," said Herkimer County legislator Robert Schrader, 49, who represents Herkimer village and town. "It's a very nice community. We have never had anything like this happen, not in my lifetime."

The county has a population of almost 65,000 people.

The barbershop and carwash slayings, if committed by the same gunman, would represent the third mass killing of 2013. All have been shootings.

The FBI defines a mass killing as when four or more people are killed. There have been 201 such cases since 2006 in the United States.

What police say was an attempted apartment robbery in Tulsa ended with four women slain in January. Police have arrested two brothers, both of whom have been charged with murder.

Later that month, a 15-year-old boy was charged with five counts of murder after his family was found shot at their Albuquerque home.

Myers then fled the scene in his vehicle and went to an abandoned building in Herkimer where he is believed to be now. Police recovered the suspect's vehicle at the scene and are in the process of searching the location. According to Supt. D'Amico, shots were fired at police at this location and law enforcement returned fire. No one was hit.

Officials are reportedly concerned about the safety of officers and are in no rush to bring this to a conclusion, D'amico says.

Governor Cuomo called Wednesday's events an "inexplicable situation" and said there is "no apparent rational motive to provoke these attacks."

Little known about 'jittery' Mohawk man accused of shooting 6
http://www.herkimertelegram.com/topstories/x898148473/Little-known-about-jittery-Mohawk-man-accused-of-shooting-6

Herkimer, N.Y. —

Quiet. Jittery. Nervous.
Kurt Myers was all of those things, acquaintances say.
Now, the 64-year-old Mohawk man is an accused killer.
Little is known about the man police say shot six people — killing four of them — in Herkimer and Mohawk with a shotgun.
Did he have a family? Was he employed? Why did he target a small barber shop and an oil change business on Wednesday morning?
His only past arrest was for driving while intoxicated in 1973 in the town of Webb, state police said.
“He came out of nowhere. He was not on our radar and hasn’t caused any problems,” Herkimer and Mohawk police Chief Joseph Malone said.
Police removed a number of firearms and ammunition from 32 S. Washington St. where he lived, but said it was unclear whether they belonged to Myers or another tenant.
Michele Mlinar, who works as a bartender and server at Cangee’s Bar and Grill in Herkimer, said Myers had been a regular customer for about 10 years.
He was always a loner and had an issue with people, she said. He was pleasant to the staff but “very jittery and nervous.”
“When I saw his picture, I just got sick to my stomach,” she said. “It could have been here. It could have been us.”
Myers would usually drink two Coors while listening to live music on Fridays and Saturdays and then quietly leave.
“He just wasn’t a people person, and he would never talk to anyone else,” she said while outside the state police barracks in Herkimer waiting for a news conference to begin.
Fred Randall lived next door to Myers’ home at 30 S. Washington St. where a fire damaged the building Wednesday morning.
Randall said he didn’t know the suspect well, except that Myers would often take early morning walks.
“He was a very quiet guy, and didn’t talk much,” Randall said. “This is Mohawk, N.Y. You don’t expect this to happen here.”

Police in upstate New York late Wednesday remained in a tense standoff with a man suspected of killing four people and injuring two more, according to authorities.

New York State Police believe Kurt R. Myers is holed up in an abandoned building in Herkimer, NY after going on a shooting spree at a local car wash and barber shop.

Troopers exchanged gunfire with the suspect when they first arrived at the scene of now-abandoned sports bar where they believe the 64-year-old is in hiding, superintendent of New York State Police Jospeh D’Amico told reporters at a press conference Wednesday evening.

No officers were hurt but police have so far had no success in communicating with Myers.

Authorities believe that before his rampage, the 68-year-old set his residence on fire in Mohawk, NY, a small town between that lies roughly halfway between Syracuse and Albany.

From there, Myers is believed to have gone to John’s Barber Shop at about 9:30 a.m. EDT, and shot four people, killing two of them, cops said.

"Totally unprovoked, we believe he fired a number of rounds from the shotgun," D'Amico said.

He then allegedly went to Gaffney’s Car Wash in the neighboring town of Herkimer and killed two more people before driving off to the abandoned bar where police believe he currently is in hiding.

“This is truly an inexplicable situation. There was no apparent rationale motive to the best of our knowledge at this time to provoke these attacks,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at the press conference.

State Police identified the victims who died in the barbershop shooting as Harry Montgomery, 68, of Mohawk, and Michael Ransear, 57, of Herkimer. Killed at the car wash were Thomas Stefka, an employee in his 60s, and Michael Renshaw, a man State Police said was in his 40s and is a 20-year-veteran of the Department of Corrections.

Myers only other known criminal history was a 1973 arrest for driving while intoxicated. A number of guns and ammunition were found in his residence, according to Cuomo.

The areas around the standoff have been evacuated, and D’Amico said police are prepared to be hunkered down for the long hall.

James Baron, Mohawk's 29-year-old mayor, said he doesn't know Myers but knew several of the people who were shot, including "at least" two of the barbershop victims.

The mayor described his town of 2,700 people as close-knit and friendly, "the kind of place where you'd say, 'Oh, it would never happen here.'"

Cuomo echoed those sentiments in front of reporters, noting, “This is just another example that there is no community that is beyond the scope of senseless gun violence, and unfortunately we see this more and more and more.”

Michele Mlinar, a bartender in Herkimer, told The Utica Observer-Dispatch that Myers was a regular at The Cangees Bar and Grill where she works.

"When I saw his picture, I just got sick to my stomach,” she told the paper, adding that Myers was nice to staff but always “very jittery and nervous.”

“It could have been here. It could have been us,” she said.

Cuomo cautioned that the healing process for the small, tight-knit community will last much longer than the standoff with police.

Local schools are on lockdown.

Herkimer and Mohawk are villages that face each other on opposite sides of the Mohawk River, in the state's Mohawk Valley region.

Suspect in Herkimer, New York shooting spree shot dead by police after standoff

Authorities in upstate New York say the suspected gunman in a rampage at a car wash and a barbershop that left four people dead and two wounded has been killed by police Thursday morning in a shootout.

Kurt Myers, 64, was killed by police who had surrounded a block of small businesses in the village of Herkimer since Wednesday afternoon.

Elite police teams went into the building around 8 a.m. local time, trooper Jack Keller said. The shootout occurred in the basement.

Keller said police sent in the dog first and Myers shot and killed it.

'He was waiting for us'
- State Trooper Jack Keller

"He was waiting for us," Keller said. "He kills the dog. They hear shots fired. Our teams returned fire and the suspect gets shot."

Hundreds of law enforcement personnel surrounded the building. Police say Myers walked into a barbershop near the town of Mohawk, coolly asked if the man cutting hair remembered him and then opened fire with a shotgun, the first shots in a burst of violence that left four dead and two critically wounded.

John Seymour, one of the men wounded in the attacks told his sister, Mary Hornett, the barbershop attack came out of nowhere.

"He just said that the guys were in the barbershop and this guy comes in and he says, `Hi John, do you remember me?' and my brother said, `Yes, Kurt, how are you?' and then he just started shooting," Hornett said.

Hornett said her brother, who was hospitalized in critical condition, was doing well after being shot in the left hand and right hip.

"My brother couldn't think of any reason why he would do such a thing," she said, adding that Myers hadn't been in the shop for a couple of years.
The shootings shattered the peace of Mohawk and Herkimer, two small villages about 170 miles northwest of New York City, separated by the Mohawk River and the New York State Thruway.

Police said Myers' rampage started with a fire in his apartment in Mohawk at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. He then drove to John's Barber Shop around the corner and used a shotgun to kill two customers, D'Amico said, identifying them as Harry Montgomery, 68, and Michael Ransear, 57, a retired corrections officer. In addition to Seymour, the shop's owner, another customer, Dan Haslauer, also was listed in critical condition at a Utica hospital.

The gunman then drove to Gaffy's Fast Lube in nearby Herkimer and used the shotgun to kill Thomas Stefka, an employee, and Michael Renshaw, a customer who was a 23-year veteran of the state Department of Corrections, D'Amico said.

Police had not had any communication with Myers, whose only known police record was a 1973 drunken-driving arrest, D'Amico said.

Neighbors said they barely knew Myers, who rarely spoke. Traci Randall said the only time she remembers speaking to her next-door neighbor was when he yelled at her son because he thought he had shot an air pellet at his Jeep.

"He was kind of a loner. No wife," she said.

Michele Mlinar, a bartender at Cangee's Bar and Grille in Herkimer, said Myers frequently stopped in for a bottle of beer or two, and left without speaking to anyone. She said he was always alone. She hadn't known his name until police released his mug shot on Wednesday.
