Your Guide to Dressing Like a Decent Person at CPAC

By David Weigel

Posted Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 1:19 PM

This Pinterest page, the first I have ever seen fit to embed on the blog, is a nice antidote to the "Grindr hookups at CPAC" stuff we read every year.

Alternate title: "How not to end up in a Stephen Glass story about CPAC."

I disagree with that graphic, golf shirts are not dressing up. They're for playing golf or going to the park, not for CPAC.

I don't get the "if you would wear it to a bar or club don't wear it to CPAC" part. I mean maybe a sports bar, but who goes to a proper bar or club wearing a tshirt and athletic shoes?

loafers are kind of a strange shoe choice for guys. I'd probably wear oxfords or derby shoes. Or some dress boots would work too.

Also agree with token. Golf shirt (AKA Polo) would be underdressing for CPAC.

It should be easy for guys: just wear a damn suit!

Loafers are fine. A pair of Ferragamo loafers works perfectly with a suit:

I would just stay in my suit. Take off the tie and you're set for bar/clubs.

Someone forgot to pass this on to Ron Paul, seeing how we wears black sneakers pretty much everywhere. (I do too!)

I disagree with some of the contents. Jeans can be ok if they're clean, not ripped or worn down, and tasteful. In fact, I usually wear nice jeans along with a dress shirt and tie to most official "dressy" party functions like conventions. Im usually way overdressed compared to most in attendance. I'd go full suit if Im speaking or running for an office or an otherwise very visible appearance, however.

eta: I didnt see the pics of Rand above when I posted this. I like his style! Maybe not the argyle sweater/blazer combo but I like the jeans.

I had a wonderful time at VVS changing from my dress skirt/blouse/hair down/makeup into torn jeans, hair up, no makeup, and regular t-shirt adorned with a Santorum sticker hanging around the conference :p

Looked like two different people. :)

Yea Rand's jeans are pretty freaking awesome. I love how it's not even a nice pair of dark jeans... just some old levis that are way to baggy for him.

I think if you're already a proven successful person you can get away with a lot more fashion-wise. I dress like shit 90% of the time, but I do think it's important to look nice when you're meeting new people in a professional setting.

That's why I wear a cocktail dress to go swimming in, and togas to job interviews, and a chicken costume to funerals.

Jeans w/ sport coat/blazer, shirt and tie, also sneakers is what I went with to Maine convention. To me, it says "I care some, but not a whole lot" Khakis are acceptable, but jeans aren't? I know this is considered the case, but why? both are 100% cotton pants, they look similar. But suit would be best if you want to run around and meet people and impress them.

He could have pulled this outfit off if he wore a white collared shirt under the sweater with the collar sticking out. The black top is too casual and your jacket should never be the same color as either layer under it.
