View Full Version : Rand's been in office for two years already, do you expect him to keep pushing on drones?

This has been a question in the back of my mind over the past few days. All I know is that I've been equally disappointed and proud of Rand in the past couple years. His opposition to the Patriot Act and NDAA were great, but at the same time he seemed to really soften on issues like Gitmo and the Israel-US relationship.
What do you guys think? I hope the response he's seen has emboldened him to keep fighting and standing up for civil liberties on a larger scale. But I don't know, because it's taken him TWO years to really hold the administration's feet to the fire on this, so there's a possibility he could just fall into the background again, allowing the media and corporate senators to control what we get to talk about on the national scale.

Perhaps he's just getting some momentum. Even with his dad knowing the ropes in politics he's trying to forge his own brand and the stakes are pretty high.
He's picking his battles, I'd say. And he's making sure the time is ripe rather than doing like his father and battling the entire establishment all the time. And yeah, I do feel a bit like those Obama jackoffs who claim that their guy is "playing chess." But the filibuster is a very good thing, and he's going to have to use some serious subtlety and nuance to keep the momentum without the potential negatives. So far, I'll give him an A+. (Relative to the rest of the senate, not to Ron.)

Two years 'already'? Um, dude, his dad was in Congress for two dozen years and never did figure out how to stick the president's feet in the fire. I'd say Rand Paul is freaking miraculous. He did more for us last Wednesday than the rest of the House and Senate combined have in their entire careers.
It's our job to keep the conversation going. He brought all kinds of Americans to our table. What more do you want from him at the moment?
Give the man some credit.
I think that he should feel encouraged, but continue to pick his battles wisely. Especially with so many in the media praising him, the opposition is going to be looking for him to let his guard down after this, IMO.

The opposition is going to be looking for every chance they can think of to tell us he isn't trustworthy and he's gaming us. Of course, all the politicians game us and the media never tells us so. Therefore, the only way they tell us he's gaming us is if they're gaming us. They will, in fact, try every variation they can think of, now that Rand Paul has broken out and made this successful strike.
We have massive forces arrayed against us, and they have one hell of a big megaphone at their disposal. So far as I can tell, we have exactly two things going for us. They've been lying so consistently for so long, and...

I agree with the general thrust of this post, but in defense of Ron, he never got into the Senate, and thus didn't have the kind of power that Rand does-- if he had, I'm sure we would have seen one or two epic filibusters amid his term.

Rand can't filibuster whenever he likes. He said in one of his interviews that the Democratic Senate leadership tightly guards the floor and doesn't really allow Senators to speak much. On the day of his filibuster, they had slipped up and left the floor unguarded. That won't happen often, especially now.
