If you live in a town in New Hampshire, Tuesday, March 12th is likely town election day. In the case of the city of Keene, it is school election day. Wherever you live in New Hampshire, look into seeing if there is an election. If so, go and vote for freedom. I can assure you, the usual folks will show up at the voting location in your town and vote. You can either join them or let them dictate your local government to you.

Go to your town website and find the sample ballot. Study the candidates and the issues. If you cannot find the information online, go to your town hall. Here are sample ballots for the towns of Bedford ( http://bedfordnh.org/pages/BedfordNH_Clerk/townsampleballot.pdf ), Canaan ( http://www.canaannh.org/town_meetings_and_voting/ballot2013.pdf ) , Hampstead ( http://www.hampsteadnh.us/pages/hampsteadnh_clerk/sampleballot031213 ), Plaistow ( http://www.plaistow.com/Pages/PLAISTOWTOWNBALLOT2013.pdf ) and Rye ( http://www.town.rye.nh.us/Pages/RyeNH_Clerk/2013%20Town%20Ballot%20final.pdf ).

Here are sample recommendations for the city of Keene.
Wards 1, 2 & 3 vote at Keene Recreation Center 312 Washington Street
Wards 4 & 5 vote at First Baptist Church 105 Maple Avenue

Warrant articles:
1. Yes, 2. Yes, 3. Yes, 4. No, 5. No, 6. Yes, 7. No

Candidates: vote for only 3 candidates
Ian B. Freeman
Darryl W. Perry
Conan W. Salada

Town meeting? What town meeting?

Do you know what issues are up for a vote at your town meeting next week? Do you even know if your town has a meeting next week? If you cannot answer at least one of those questions, then won't you be surprised when your taxes go up by $179 a year to finance the construction of a 10-story, gold-plated monument to the sitting members of the select board - on the vacant lot right next to your house.

Perhaps we exaggerate just a little bit. (It's probably a bronze statue of David Hasselhoff.) But really, if you have no idea what is on the agenda for town meeting, you could be in for a rude awakening later.

Town meetings might seem like nuisances, but they are important. They give you the chance to vote on serious local issues, such as a town hall renovation (Pelham), a new middle school (Windham), road and bridge reconstruction (Salem), town labor contracts (Hudson), a new highway garage (Hopkinton) or a giant statue of David Hasselhoff (just checking your attention span).

The good news for you, dear uninformed voter, is that most towns will meet next Tuesday or Wednesday, so you have the weekend to learn what issues are on the ballot and how you want to vote on them. Our advice: no matter how appealing it sounds, go with "no" on the Hasselhoff statue. (A cardboard cutout for the lobby of town hall is much cheaper.)

Town Meeting Tomorrow
by Susan Olsen
http://granitegrok.com/blog/2013/03/town-meeting-tomorrow

For many, if not most of us, tomorrow is Town Meeting day where we vote on school and town budgets, local government officials, planning and zoning regulations. Town meeting is government up-close and personal and is where of many us fail to effectively use our voices and our votes. Town meeting is where things like Agenda 21 and Granite State Futures get approved, town meeting is where inflated school budgets get sanctioned. In my town tomorrow, the selectboard has put a warrant article up that gives them the sole authority to enter into a 25 year lease to put a cell tower on land owned by the town (owed by me and my fellow citizens, more correctly!) and will only provide details after the ballot has closed. Not that I would mind better cell phone coverage, but don’t presume you know what’s best for me, Mr. Selectman.

We are all busy working, raising children, providing for our families and we have too often simply trusted those we elect to work and vote in our best interests. But increasingly, we find that it is not the case. Sadly, we have only ourselves to blame…
So please, go to your town’s website, find the 2013 Warrant, read through it, make sure you know what is in it. Your polls will open between 0700 and 0800 and close between 1900 and 2000. Make sure you vote and, perhaps equally as important, sit through town meeting itself tomorrow night. Ask questions. Like our good friend Ed Comeau, take a video camera. Local government – like state and federal government – belongs to us but can have some of the most direct and immediate affects.

For the after work crowd. If you know anyone in NH, please remind them that they likely have a local election this week and encourage them to research the choices and vote. Thank you!
