"In the years from 2009 to 2012, for example, it received between zero and 999 requests. User data requests have gone up 122 percent during that period.
The lack of oversight into the letters worries some, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, as well as the Justice Department."

I was expecting a higher number than that. But these are the ones that get reported, so yeah.

And how do you know that "duck duck go" is any better? If you want privacy, there is nothing online that can give you that.

this... is not true. anonymity is still possible, you just need a little more know how than you used to.

Change your MAC, routinely
Use hidemyass.com
Use PGP for your documents
Firewalls, deny all, explicitly allow
Lock down your machine (aka turn off services, setup good passwords)
etc.

More importantly, don't use real information (wherever possible). Triangulating people who leave their personal and real information isn't too difficult.

Hold on there, I'm not saying you should put your complete trust in Google but:

Under the Patriot Act, if Google or others receive an NSL, they must disclose information as long as authorities deem the request "relevant to an authorized investigation to protect against international terrorism or clandestine intelligence activities."

Even a pretty hardcore libertarian like Peter Schiff has to deal with this kind of shit with his brokerage business and he has complained about it many times. What do you expect him to do - refuse and be thrown into jail and leave behind his kid and wife?

No...go PUBLIC with it, and do it BIG. I don't care how. If that's all that's stopping people who have key information to stop these abuses of power...then what the fuck do we really have to fight for anymore? How are they then different than TPTB????

Sorry, this whole "I've got a business, family, job, ___________ to run, so I'll just keep my mouth shut" BULLSHIT has GOT to fucking stop, or it's all over. That's just as traitorous as anything.

I have a feeling it already is, and we're just metering the drips on the morphine until the end, at this point....

The requests affected between 1,000 and 1,999 accounts, except in 2010 when the range was 2,000 to 2,999 accounts, Google said.
