"cigarettes purchased in Chicago will come with $6.67 tacked on by the city, county and state"

Smokes are a financial well that public officials have gone to repeatedly to shore up shaky finances at the local and state level. When the county tax increase takes effect Friday, a pack of cigarettes purchased in Chicago will come with $6.67 tacked on by the city, county and state. That's just behind New York City's nation-leading $6.86 in taxes per pack. It will also push the cost of a pack of cigarettes in Chicago to as much as $11.
Recent cigarette tax increases have had only a short-term benefit to the government bottom line. Some people quit, while others buy cigarettes online or outside the county or state.

When the county last raised the cigarette tax — by $1 per pack in 2006 — collections initially shot up by $46.5 million, hitting $203.7 million, county records show. But by 2009, the county collected $20.4 million less than it had in 2005.

The gangs can just add smokes to the list of items they deal in. This will be a positive development for many folks in Chicago. They drive to IN where the state and local tax is just $1 per pack and then sell in Chicago = profit.

Huh. It's hard to believe we aren't worse than Illinois.

I think because the Democrats didn't control 2/3s of the legislature, they couldn't pass a bunch of tax increases they wanted. Cigarette tax increases went before the people. That helped keep the tax lowish in CA because the companies were able to spend money on commercials against tax increases. The most recent vote was very close. It would have passed but happened during a GOP primary. If it comes up again during a general election, even 47 million in tobacco company money won't be able to stop it from passing.

When I drive through Ky , TN. etc, as a young fellow I always kept state maps with the dry counties marked, no need for that , when you hit the next County line there will be a Liquor Store or two, all that revenue just leaves the ignorant County and goes to the other ....

This will accomplish the same thing as just making cigarettes flat out illegal.

It will create a Black Market. Then, these asshats will get all the benefits of having a newly created Black Market with it. Things like increase in Crime, Robbery, Homicide, Tobacco Lords, etc...

Doesn't the world seem terribly upside down when the taxes on a product are far greater than the actual price of the product?

I really like Chicago, for a city. I lived near there. Never wanted to live IN it, but I'm more suburban/rural. I don't like packs of people every day and the attendant inconveniences. But I like being near cities for the educated people and shows/museums/events.
