(EXPRESS) — A TEENAGE lacrosse star killed himself after being summoned to court for possessing cannabis worth 50p (75 cents), an inquest heard.

Ex-head boy Edward Thornber, 17, was caught smoking the drug while on holiday in Cornwall.

He hanged himself two days after receiving the summons. Law firm Pannone, acting for his family, says the paperwork was wrongly processed and Edward, of Didsbury, Manchester, should have been given only a warning.

Im sure he had other problems. Hes not the first teen to get caught smoking pot. If this was the common reaction I think wed have a severe demographic crisis on our hands.

They made him a criminal, and he could not live with himself. Terribly sad.

Or it could have been quite the opposite. Maybe he didn't have ANY problems at all and this was ruining everything he'd worked for in life.

Especially if he was your Type A personality, overachieving youth. Reputation, scholarships, opportunities... This may have been his whole world crashing down on him.

Wow. I was kicked out of my school in 9th grade for getting caught with about $2 of pot. Glad I didn't kill myself over it. For the rest of the year I had to attend night school filled with learning disabled drug addicts with behavioral problems. Gotta wonder who thought that would be a good idea.
