“The New Jersey Assembly’s majority Democrats, citing the elementary-school massacre in Newtown, Conn., passed 22 gun-control bills Thursday that backers said would help curb gun violence,” philly.com reported at 3am this morning. The new bills limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds (A1329), outlaw .50 caliber rifles (A3659), create weapon-free school zones (A1387), require background checks for private gun sales (A3748) and require safety training for people seeking firearm purchase permits (A3510). [Breakdown of provisions after the jump.] “We are not seeking to prevent law-abiding citizens from purchasing, owning, utilizing their guns. We are not trying to impede hunters and sportsmen in the state,” Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D., Essex) said before the votes. Senate passage is a done deal. All eyes turn to Governor Christie, whose non-committal comments offer little cause for hope of a veto . . .
“I’m a little surprised at how quickly they’ve done it,” Christie said Thursday after a political event in Sea Bright, where he picked up the Democratic mayor’s endorsement. “This is a very difficult issue and a complex one. And one that our national government has taken a long time to look at and study. It’s amazing to me how quickly the Assembly can move when they want to.”
Not to put too fine a point on it, another one bites the dust. Here are the new laws’ provisions as described by the Associated Press:

So they didn't grandfather anything they banned? Wow.
It’s amazing to me how quickly the Assembly can move when they want to.
When destroying liberties and controlling an alleged free people, like spending other people's money, they live for it. I'm not sure what's so amazing about it.
All eyes turn to Governor Christie, whose non-committal comments offer little cause for hope of a veto
Fat chance!
Reduce the maximum capacity of magazines to 10 rounds, as also proposed in federal legislation. New Jersey already has a 15-round cap. Retired police officers would be exempt from the reduction.
[...]
Require background checks on private sales of handguns, rifles, or shotguns through a licensed retail dealer. Transactions between immediate family members, law enforcement officers and licensed collectors would be exempt.
[...]
Prohibit the state Treasury from investing any assets of pensions or annuity funds in companies that manufacture, import, or sell assault firearms for civilian use. The bill exempts investments in companies that manufacture, import, or sell assault firearms for use by the military or law enforcement agencies.
But of course.
Prohibit a person named on the consolidated federal terrorist watch list from obtaining a firearm by disqualifying him or her from being issued a firearms ID card or a permit to purchase a handgun.
Like "peaceful terrorists (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?403352-%E2%80%9CTerrorism%E2%80%9D-and-Lexical-Warfare)?"
Thus, a terrorist is a person with political, social or ideological goals that are both deeply held and highly critical of the U.S. government. He may use violence; he may not. The “peaceful terrorist” attempts to influence society in ways that others sometimes find intimidating; for example, he may insist on owning a gun. The terrorist is also “clandestine”; that is, he cleaves to privacy and resists surveillance.
The “peaceful terrorist” is a libertarian standing in the good company of others who dissent; for example, those who believe “freedom of speech” has a literal meaning.
Conclusion
The transformation of the word “terrorist” has shifted focus from the raw reality of state violence onto the mere possibility of individual violence, which is defined broadly enough to include dissent. In a stunning lexical victory, the police state has become the victim. Those who peacefully exercise their natural rights have become the terrorists.

Except by Christie, who now has a choice to make, does he want run for President and veto this or keep being The Guv and vote for it.
Veto and loses his NJ spot.

62 percent of interstate moves involving New Jerseyans last year were people leaving the state.
If they're progs, hopefully they won't bring their filthy ideology with them to destroy more states, hm? Or maybe it's like their "long march through the institutions." Since that was so "successful," maybe they've started their long march through the states.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who has long been a supporter of stricter gun control laws, said that gun control should be part of a "national discussion" in the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., last Friday.

It is a tough one to move like that no doubt and even harder when you got a family when it is not just yourself to move. But if I had been living there for more than a few years especially with the personal income tax you have there and not to mention that god awful show that I am not going to even mention that state let happen (jokes) I would have been long gone by now. With the free state project and the resources they provide it seems sensible to be out in 2-3 years.

Wow, this is pretty impressive even for those assholes in NJ. That state has been pretty silent on the issue for several decades. Of course, they have had some of the most draconian gun laws on the books since the 70s.
The great majority of people in NJ are imbeciles of the lowest functional order and are ever so perfectly trained to the slave mindset. Any time I am there visiting the mom unit I am treated to just how endlessly stupid people the people are over there. Most literally worship the State. They are so completely indoctrinated with the collectivist authoritarian dogma that they cannot see past the ends of their hooked noses. Had I not spent many years living there I would find it very difficult to believe that they were not all putting on the largest gag in human history. To hear Joe Average in NJ talk politics is a study in the surreal and bizarre. If you're not from that place you would never be able to wrap your head around the system of perception and "thought". NJ really is a unique place and a truly monumental shit hole. There is no money, no promise one could make to lure me back there. Not for anything.
Those in NJ who are intelligent and good suffer some pretty rank indignities at the hand of the state that the gross majority worships with such single minded and slavish devotion.
I predict Christie will remain silent on the legislation. He will not veto it, but he may also try to play it slick and not sign it into law. Either way he is a fat pig and with any luck his political future will be short and miserable.

Romney lost against one of the most disliked Presidents in recent history, that went into the election with an economic depression hanging around his record.
The fact that Romney signed an "assault weapon" ban was not lost on a significant number of people.
<puts on conventional political analysis hat>
If Christie signs sweeping gun and magazine bans into law in NJ, he can forgot about ever running for president, and winning.
Not everybody in the GOP is brain dead, they did not vote for a GOP RINO, gun banning, ex-governor, of a liberal northeastern state in 2012.

Christie will veto this bill if it comes to his desk. His approval ratings are through the roof right now. That means he has the political capital to veto this, its not because he cares about are rights or anything. He has his eyes on the presidency and I would be surprised if that shithead signs the bill.
One other point, this magazine round limit is utterly stupid. If I wanted to get a 30 rounder I would just drive to PA and go to a gun store and buy one.

Gun Ban Bills Set to Invoke Law of Unintended Consequences (http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/02/robert-farago/gun-ban-bills-set-to-invoke-law-of-unintended-consequences/)
Posted on February 22, 2013 by Robert Farago
How much time did New Jersey reps have to read the 22 civilian disarmament bills passed a 3am this morning? I hope they had more time than New York politicians; they had all of 20 minutes to read the SAFE Act before voting. Speaking of which . . . “With less than a month before provisions of New York’s gun law go into effect, mental health professionals are waiting to learn the exact procedure for reporting people they deem likely to seriously injure themselves or others,” democratandchronicle.com reports . . .
Neither the Office of Mental Health or Governor Cuomo have issued guidelines. Not to mention the fact that health care workers [rightly] fear that the Act will prevent mentally ill residents from seeking help. Which could lead to more spree killers.
In other words, civilian disarmament bills suck in both principle and practice.
Buried in New Jersey bill A1387 is this little gem: it’s OK to enter one of New Jersey’s about-to-be-created ”weapons free” zones with a firearm if you’re . . .
A member of any rifle or pistol club organized in accordance with the rules prescribed by the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, in going to or from a place of target practice, carrying such firearms as are necessary for said target practice, provided that the club has filed a copy of its charter with the superintendent and annually submits a list of its members to the superintendent and provided further that the firearms are carried in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section.
Did you know New Jersey gun clubs have to report their members’ names to the police? Every. Single. Year.
Anyway, what happens if you unknowingly stray within the boundaries one of these weapon free zones—given that the bill doesn’t include a requirement for signs announcing the zone and “any map [of weapons free zones] approved pursuant to this subsection may be changed from time to time by the governing body of the municipality” ?
It shall not be a defense to prosecution for a violation of the ordinance that the actor was unaware that the prohibited possession took place within 500 feet of the outermost boundaries of the public property safety zone.
Who knows what new police state provisions are buried within those 22 pieces of legislation being hurried through the New Jersey legislature? Or what collateral damage they could cause? Governor Chris Christie? I don’t think so.
But I do think we’ll all be paying for these civilian disarmament measures in the years to come, in ways that we never imagined. Some of us more than others . . .

In a previous post, Nick talked about the “enthusiasm” gap between gun rights advocates and civilian disarmament proponents. Gun guys are fighting for their rights with passion, determination and, not unimportantly, strength of numbers. Professional gun grabbers may match the pro-2A side in terms of passion and determination, but they have nowhere near the number of committed supporters. Despite the slaughter in Newtown, a sycophantic press and Double Barrel Joe Biden’s pronouncement that “America is with us!” the disarmament industry is hurting for homies. No wonder ”One Million Moms For Gun Control” changed their name to “Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense In America.” Also no surprise: the President’s Boyz are using old-fashioned Chicago-style arm twisting to create the appearance of popular support . . .
