What the fuck is this? They think they can somehow force this nation to do this?

This new move for "national service" is yet another strong indication, for me, that the left of today is a completely mutated anomaly compared to what it was just a few decades ago, when the most common act of defiance in the face of state authority was to burn one's draft card. What the Hell happened?! :(

They have gotten away with it before, what makes you think the sheep won't accept it again?

Everybody in Washington loves Israel so much, that they are now going to emulate their military requirements.

Every year someone proposes some variation of a conscription bill in Congress. The last one I remember paying attention to was a few years ago and got voted down 400-4. This won't pass.

That being said, it is absolutely ridiculous.

“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded,” Obama said as a candidate in 2008.

Don't know how I missed that gem in the '08 campaign. What an outrageous statement.

This from the article...

to provide for the registration of women under the Military Selective Service Act, and for other purposes”

It sure didn't take long to go from 'women should be in front line combat roles' to 'we need to draft women.'

As for their forced service, they can go fuck themselves.

I don't know how you missed it either, unless you were getting all your information from the Democrat sympathetic media and ignoring every other source. I remember several bloggers, alternative news sources, and even some less statist media trying to make people aware of this statement for quite some time during the '08 campaign. Typically, ABCNNBCBS buried it to help out their candidate.

It seems that the new "left" is becoming the very thing that they used to criticize about the "right", and vice versa. Two wings, one gigantic vulture.

To be completely honest, I had a bit of a political burnout around that time. I was so turned off by the choice of Obama or McCain that I just stopped paying attention. Unfortunately I knew nothing about Ron Paul at the time. Still, I don't know how I missed that.

in its current form it won't pass, but at some point Obama will link student loans (which are now federalized) to national service

might be done with an executive order.

Scumbags on both sides did everything to kill most of Ron Paul's bill... they did it ... killed most in committee.

I don't know how you people can expect to be free if you aren't willing to be enslaved for the cause of freedom. Or something like that.

I wouldn't be so quick to sat "this will never pass". I hear people say they think military service should be mandatory all of the time, especially from the old folks. I've been hearing it a lot lately, come to think of it.

They're under the impression that military service "straightens people out", and "teaches them respect", etc.

There is some truth to that final statement.

The military likes the fact that they have an all volunteer force. Numerous generals have spoken out against conscription, because they know that a Soldier/Sailor/Airman/Marine who is forced to serve will be, on average, less productive than a volunteer. That doesn't mean that anyone will listen, but the military is against the idea.

I have very little faith in Congress, but I would like to think this is one issue that really won't go anywhere. This, to me, is an extremely blatant infringement of liberty... I mean outside of gun confiscation I don't think it gets any more blatant than this. Look at the public outcry gun control is creating, and that's an issue where there are plenty of people in support of it. If this were actually passed, I think you would see nearly unanimous rejection from the public.

Or maybe I should say that I hope we would? I've been losing faith in the American public lately.

Give 7 years of your life to the gvmt...

I can see a bunch of problems with this. Pragmatically, there is a phrase that describes a 18yo. "High School Senior". So the military is going to take over the last year of the public fool system?

This is universal, so certain elements like those in street gangs, that would have been rejected if they volunteered are going to get military training and put in positions where they could misappropriate heavy firepower. Maybe not the best idea...

So someone gets out at 25, no more need for financial aid as the military will cover it, but they would graduate with a BS at 29 or later for a masters, etc. Think about the effect fewer years of paying into SS, medicare and medicaid would have on those programs. Actually, are members of the military forced to pay into these programs now? I was under the impression they were exempt.

Actually, I wouldn't be completely against this, were it just 1-2 years and some concessions were made:

After training, each and every one who served got to take their assault rifle home.
The gvmt underwrote the cost of target ranges and ammo.
Close all overseas bases and commit to a non interventionist foreign policy.
Build hospitals in mountains and fighter hangers in cutbacks along highways.
Change the building codes so all new construction had to have a fallout shelter and all bridges are made with bore holes for demolition.
Repeal all the gun control laws and let average citizens purchase, anti-aircraft guns, for example...
Place control of the military in the states hands.

While I don't like the FORCED to serve aspect, a return to the model our founding fathers established has a lot of upside.

Why not turn the country into Switzerland?
