A bill requiring gun purchasers to pay the costs of their own background checks cleared the Colorado House on Monday, the same day the chamber passed bills requiring background checks on private firearms sales and limiting gun magazines to 15 rounds.

Destroy jobs. It's what the government does!

How are they going to enforce the private sale background checks?

But Republicans arguing against the bill said the required checks would not stop criminals from getting guns and would be unenforceable without gun registration.

But of course. That must be next on the agenda.

Dems have a 20-15 edge in the state senate so unless we can get 3 of them to defect this thing will be law since our governor is a Dem as well.

You know about the Free State Project, right :)

Anyway, there is still hope that perhaps none of these bills will become law.

So would current 16+ round magazines be grandfathered in?

I don't know, but this is going to be fucked up for manufacturers. NY has a 7 round limit, some states have 10 round limits, Colorado might have 15 round limit, some states might have 20 round limits and then there will be the no-limit states. It's going to be so inefficient to produce so many different magazines, I wonder if they'll just ignore the NY market completely?

DENVER (AP) — Limits on the size of ammunition magazines and universal background checks passed the Colorado House on Monday, during a second day of emotional debates that has drawn attention from the White House as lawmakers try to address recent mass shootings.
The bills were among four that the Democratic-controlled House passed amid strong resistance from Republicans, who were joined by a few Democrats to make some of the votes close.
The proposed ammunition restrictions limit magazines to 15 rounds for firearms, and eight for shotguns. Three Democrats joined all Republicans voting no on the bill, but the proposal passed 34-31.

Yea I know. I have no less than 17 hi-cap (standard capacity) magazines. If this garbage passes, I need to know in advance whether they will be illegal or not. Believe me, I am very much aware of the inalienability of my rights.

They may be moving to Arizona but they aren't having any luck with gun laws here. We have about the best gun laws in the country and the legislature just introduced a bill to allow school staff to get trained and carry on school property. It might pass, but Governor Sea Hag might veto it.

Probably not. They will probably just go back to inserting riveted blocks into standard mags. That's what they did during the Clinton ban. The limit was 10 rounds, so they took a standard 20 round mag, inserted a metal block so the follower could only hold 10 rounds, and then riveted the block to the floorplate of the mag.

If that's what they are going to do, then all they'd have to do is make different size "blocks" for the different States. Also, if that's what they are going to do, it will be easy to defeat. I specifically remember taking an electric drill during the Clinton ban, drilling out the floorplate rivet, sliding it out and pulling the block thus rendering my Clinton mags into illegal full-size mags with about....ohh...2 minutes of work each.

Yeah I thought of that, but it's so easy to get around as you say. I would expect those mags to outlawed and manufacturers force to make "non-convertible" magazines.

Just goes to show how unbelievably ineffective any gun/magazine ban would truly be.

The Clinton ban was pretty effective - the two companies that made 30 rounders for the military went out of business because there were not enough civilian sales - which they needed to stay in business.
