GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba -- In late January, shortly after President Barack Obama began his second term, Navy Cmdr. Walter Ruiz stood inside an old airplane hangar on the southernmost tip of the island and reflected on a central but unfulfilled promise of Obama’s 2008 campaign.

“We’re still here,” Ruiz said, as reporters milled around the aging hangar, which has been repurposed as a work space for the journalists and human rights observers who have been flying in and out of Guantanamo since the first suspected terrorists were brought here 11 years ago. Instead of planes, the hangar is now home to several trailer-size sheds with slanted roofs. More offices line the hangar's perimeter, and a giant map of the base is painted on the floor. Screeching bats fly in and out of the hangar at night.

“We’re still in military commissions. We’re still arguing about the basic protections the system affords us. We’re still talking about indefinite detention," Ruiz continued. "We’re still talking about not closing the facility.”

Any resemblance between Candidate Obama and President Obama is purely physical...

It wont close, but it may move. It might even be expanded a bit. Most likely to encompass the entire Untied States.

Good to see one of the few reasons I voted for him in 2008 came to fruition. Oh wait.

It's moments like this, JUST like this that for some reason I could never understand how stupid, oblivious, and ignorant you have to be to STILL support this fool after all these years.

Why do the Feds operate a base in Cuba while still blocking trade?

Plausible deniability...

Oh, yeah. An american can't buy a cuban cigar. But tax thugs can buy prisons? Sounds a little off to me.

Doesn't matter. So long as Obama does it, any number of Bush-era atrocities are not only acceptable, but celebrated.

We trade with Cuba. Our politicians import their cigars and we export our "terrorists." Besides, just imagine how much safer the Cuban people must feel knowing a US military base full on Marines is right there for them if they were to be oppressed by a tyrannical regime!

I bet Cuba has some nice beaches. outside of Ozzie Alonso (the best DM in the US) defecting and joining the Sounders, i'm tired of being at war with Cuba. it's been 50 f#cking years.
