In a move that could be called ballsy or hypocritical (or even a premature April fools prank), The Pirate Bay are threatening to sue for alleged copyright infringement. This is a fascinating (if not ironic) move, given it comes from an online service who've become synomymous with copyright infringement.

It appears that anti-piracy campaign group CIAPC redesigned their website (http://www.piraattilahti.fi/) to mimic The Pirate Bay's, right down to The Piratebay's now famous pirate ship logo. Never shy to pass up a publicity opportunity, The Piratebay are loudly expressing outrage, saying that they will take CIAPC to court on the grounds that copyright theft is a "threat to economies worldwide".

A Piratebay source has even been quoted by Torrentfreak as saying that "We are outraged by this behaviour. People must understand what is right and wrong. Stealing material like this on the internet is a threat to economies worldwide. We feel that we must make a statement and therefore we will sue them for copyright infringement. If not even IFPI and their friends can respect copyright, perhaps it's time to move on?"

Should the court case go ahead it promises to be extremely humorous, offering the Swedish online service plenty of scope to lambast CIAPC whilst generating plenty of publicity.

Publicity isn't anything new for The Pirate Bay who have been hit legislation and numerous court cases over the last 5 years. Piratebay founders were jailed in 2009 whilst access to the online service was blocked in the UK and Netherlands last year.

Here's a look behind the scenes during the time of their last major court case:

No, they played a brilliant move legally. If they lose, then it sets precedence for them and for piraters everywhere to have their cases dropped. If they win, then they can start going after the others. They are using the legal system against their enemies.

Still seems hypocritical to me, although I suppose they are just trolling.

The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll.
