Rubio, meanwhile, is being billed as the GOP’s next big thing and has earned plaudits from the party establishment for his early work on immigration reform.


That's the key right there. The fact that the GOP sees that they're alienating minorities and clamoring to attract future minority voters is, in my opinion, one of the main reasons many in the GOP have gravitated towards Rubio. Not because he'd be the best candidate, but because a non-white male serves as a poster child for forward thinking progress and opening the tent for people besides Caucasians, in my opinion. Rand Paul, ideologically, may be what some are looking for, but in the eyes of the Democrats and an increasingly minority growing country, the whole 'white male' thing could still be a hindrance. If he can overcome it, great for him.
