This. When I lived outside Chicago we had worse. Sure, you have to shovel in the middle so it doesn't build up or risk needing to hire a bobcat when the weather clears, there will be a snow day at the other end until they can get the roads clear, and some people who think 'all wheel drive' on their minivans means they can floor it regardless of inches of snow on the road will end up in a ditch and learn from it.

That is a great question. You know, I've been dropping things today. I was making French toast and I dropped an egg. I was going to drink some milk, but I dropped the glass. I was going to eat a slice of bread, but it fell hitting the floor. It then dawned on me! I am literally dropping everything because of snow in New York City! I have shut down! I have been sucked into the drama! It is huge!

"Nemo" makes me think of a cute little handicapped (finnicapped?) fish. Let's put a friendly face on this storm so the kids aren't afraid. Remember "Nuclear Reactor Boy"? Last I looked at a southern NH 5 day forecast, after the storm there was going to be a couple of days of rain. Now that's scary: black ice, ruined trees from ice, etc.

I live on the NH seacoast. The weather report says we may get over two feet.

The was a massive blizzard in this region in 1978 which dumped over 27 inches locally. I wasn't alive at the time, but everyone who lives around here has heard stories of the storms intensity. I think it would be cool if this storm bests the one from '78.

I hope NOT! We still haven't recovered from Sandy!

To tell you the truth, I was pretty freaked out when I heard about FEMA setting up over here the first time. Plus we had the national guard all over the place and a curfew at night. Even helicopters flying over head. (a conspiracy theorist's worst nightmare)

But after what we went through, it was all needed. There were looters and catastophic damage. For those of you not in the area that was affected by Sandy, you have no clue how devestating it was. People are still without homes. And those who have made repairs are now bracing for more problems. I personally don't think it's going to be like Sandy, but I have prepared for more power and heat outages, considering what happened last time. The media always hyped up the storms over here. But most people never paid it any mind because it always turned out less than what they predicted. That's why alot of people had to be rescued during Sandy because they thought it wasn't going to be a big deal. I think the whole experience of Sandy has made our state and local officials even more hyper vigilant now.

Do I have uncomfortable feelings when it comes to FEMA? Yeah, most definitely. But the people I met on the local level were all great and just doing their jobs in assisting victims. You've got to remember, it's a real emotional shock when you've lost everything. Imagine walking into your home completely flooded out. You don't know where to begin. So you're really quite vunerable and open to any help that you can get. It's easy to sit back and say what you might do if it ever happend to you. I know because I've done it myself. But in reality, your really have no idea. (I'm not saying this to you personally, just generalizing) You can do all the planning before hand and it's important to have supplies, but Sandy really went way beyond that. What can a person do when you know what FEMA is really all about? These types of devestating storms is probably helping those in power to get residents acclimated to seeing national guardsmen and FEMA in their neighborhoods. I don't like that one bit but what can one do??

We just got downgraded from a storm watch to a storm warning, due to only getting 6 inches at the most. So, under 6 inches you get a warning, not a watch, apparently.
Silly me, I figured a "watch" was, looks like it's coming your way... and a "warning" was snow is imminent. What do I know.

‎"Kurt Schwartz, director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, said at the news conference that the travel ban applies to all roads in the state, but there are various exceptions, such as for public safety, media, and vehicles supplying esssential businesses like convenience stores and hardware stores. Violating the travel ban, he said, could incur a penalty of a year in jail and a $500 fine."

Congratulations, Massholes, you're all officially under house arrest.

LOL. NY would have likely issued a statewide ban on driving but it isn't expected to be anywhere near as bad for parts of NY. I don't know if house arrest is the proper term. At the very least, 100,000s of people in MA have snow boots, snowshoes or cross country skis. The Massholes drive up to NH every weekend to enjoy Winter recreation.

its here, its overhead, and in Massachusetts you need a very good reason to be out after 4 p.m because the governor
has issued an emergency degree that says frivolous trips could get one hit with a $500 fine and possibly a year in jail...

Uh-oh: New York City Will Protect Us (http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/132038.html) Posted by Becky Akers on February 8, 2013 02:50 PM

New York, New Jersey, and New England are bracing for their second "storm of the century (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-08/blizzard-cancels-u-s-flights-threatens-historic-snow.html)" in as many years, with "blizzard warnings (http://www.google.org/publicalerts/alert?aid=80b7f48c71b1d1b8&hl=en&gl=US&source=web)" and fear-mongering as politicians dispense advice to stupid serfs. Naturally, New York City's nanny, Mike "Big Gulp (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/14/nyregion/health-board-approves-bloombergs-soda-ban.html?_r=0)" Bloomberg, couldn't resist another opportunity to patronize us. You tell me: based on the monologue below, is he a dead ringer for your kindergarten-teacher or what?

Now, as we do during all emergency weather conditions (http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c701c789a0/index.jsp?pageID=mayor_press_release&catID=1194&doc_name=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fom%2Fht ml%2F2013a%2Fpr056-13.html&cc=unused1978&rc=1194&ndi=1), our City has a plan of action for keeping New Yorkers safe [sic], and we’ve already put that plan into motion. [Well, that oughta finish us off.] And I would like to describe a little bit about what our different City agencies are doing and stress some things that we would ask all New Yorkers to do.

The first is: Stay off the city streets, stay out of your cars, and stay in your homes while the worst of this storm is on us. That’s for your own protection during potentially hazardous outdoor conditions. ... Staying off the streets will make it easier for City workers to clear the streets of snow so that emergency vehicles can use them. ... Also, there is no need to do panic buying of gas for your cars; all indications are the gas supply is plentiful and deliveries will not be disrupted. [Right: "A sign stating 'No Gas' at a Mobil Station in Queens Friday shows how the storm could impact fuel deliveries. (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nemo-new-yorkers-bracing-worst-article-1.1258762)] Tonight ... [c]ook a meal, stay home, read a good book, watch a movie, just take it easy. [Really, Nanny? That's big of you. I thought you'd want me working and earning money so you can steal-sorry, tax me on it.] Remember, there are a lot of people who are going to be out there shoveling the snow and trying to plow it to the side, and [you] just don’t want to get in their way. And also, if you’re out there shoveling snow, be careful, don’t over-exert yourself with that task. This snow can be very heavy snow, very wet snow, and you really can strain yourself or worse. Also ... it’s good to look at your neighbors who may need a little extra help getting through the next several days. If you see someone homeless on the streets or in a public place, just pick up the phone, call 311. [Hey, "see something, say something," you rat-fink, you.] This is no night to be out in the elements, and we will send a staff right away to help that person. [Your Intrepid Reporter once caught the final stages of "a staff" "helping" such a woman. I pass her every day and know she's elderly and insane but no threat to anyone. Yet "a staff" was forcing her into an ambulance despite her screams and protestations.]

This tripe continues for an unbelievable 2485 words (an op-ed in a newspaper runs about 750; the Declaration of Independence is around 1550).

Meanwhile, New Yorker Bruce McLane has the right idea. He loves sports and kids about equally, so he coaches the latter in the former. When I concluded an email to him with a cheery, "Enjoy the blizzard!" he responded, "Yup. No skool. They educate themselves." ..

One thing I don't understand. In the article I was reading, the governor announced a ban on being on the road past 4pm, with criminal punishments.

Now, I see how I got this newsflash. I work from an armchair in my cozy abode, and sometimes, I check the news to see what's happening.

But what about Joe Blow? Or Nancy Schmancy who works the night shift, sleeps during the day, goes to get groceries at 4pm, and now has a misdemeanor or felony or whatever it is?

So are people supposed to be 100% aware of laws that change not just when they wake up, BUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, OUT OF THE BLUE?

This is insanity! Who elects these psychopaths?

We received 11-12" in the NYC metro :)

We shoveled/snowblow'd early in the morning after our neighbor woke us up - they were leaving for a flight to Puerto Rico, and saw my moms van door was wide open... some hoodlum tried to rob stuff out of her car early Saturday morning.

Roads were pretty clear last night, so Matt and I went to a local blues/jazz club to chill out :)

Hope all of you in that 40+" snow zone are doing alright. That's an insane amount of snow

Some cash. We thought at first it could have been someone homeless, but that thought was put to rest as there was no room for someone to sleep in there - they basically tore up and threw around all the bags in the back of her car, probably looking for something of value (like a GPS). None found. Her seats were a mess. Think he/she walked away with ~$6. Hope they enjoyed a coffee with that.
