Well, this is the first time the MD CFL really screwed up that I can remember. There was a rally and chance for public input about the new gun legislation today and they sent out the e-mail at 5:22pm :(

The End of the Second Amendment

It's Wednesday and there are thousands of Marylanders a long way from home.

The local news angencies are anticipating that over 3000 Marylanders will make their way to Annapolis today, a number that is rarely seen in the capitol.

Thousands of people have skipped work - paid or unpaid - so that they can stand up for their rights.

When this many people stand up, any concerned citizen would feel that something that is really, really wrong.

Unfortunately, they would be absolutely correct as the kooks in Annapolis have put forward some of the most intrusive firearm criminalization legislation that I have ever seen in the entire country.

We need your help.

Martin O'Malley and his accomplices in Annapolis are wasting no time in exploiting recent national events in order to ransack the 2nd amendment rights of law-abiding Marylanders.

If we can't unite and mobilize gun-loving Marylanders behind this issue it will be the end of the 2nd amendment as we know it.

That sounds dramatic. Unfortunately, its that bad.

Writing this next section is going to be excruciating - I want you to read this carefully and understand the full magnitude of this bill:

Martin O'Malley's Firearm Criminalization Bill
Currently in the Legislature

Handguns

Assault pistols: BANNED
Fixed magazines over 10 rounds: BANNED
Barrel shrouds: BANNED
Threaded barrels: BANNED
Second hand grips: BANNED
Magazines inserted outside of the pistol grip: BANNED

Shotguns

Any regulated shotgun: BANNED
Revolver style shotguns: BANNED
Semi-automatic shotguns with telescoping or folding stock and a pistol grip: BANNED

Semi-automatic center-fire rifles

• Any rifle currently regulated: BANNED
• Lengths less than 30”: BANNED
• Fixed magazines over 10 rounds: BANNED
• Forward pistol/vertical grips: BANNED
• Thumb-hole stocks: BANNED
• Telescoping or folding stocks: BANNED
• Grenade/flare launchers: BANNED
• Flash hiders: BANNED

Along with these bans, the legislature is pushing for an assortment of new criminalization schemes.

If this new bill passes, it will be illegal to purchase any banned firearm or bring one into the state if you move here. If a firearm is banned, it will also be illegal to own any ammunition for that firearm.

Any owner of a banned firearm that is under 21 will have to give up their firearm. Anyone under 21 may not handle ANY ammunition outside the presence of an adult - game over for young gun owners.

Any owner of a weapon that the state bans is forced to register the weapon or be thrown in prison.

In addition to the straight up gun bans and a mandatory gun registry, O'Malley and his cohorts are cooking up new economic shackles to burden Marylanders and inhibit their ability to own firearms.

Any person who wishes to purchase a handgun of ANY type will be forced to:

• Pay a $100 fee every five years
• Obtain a background check and be finger printed (at your cost)
• Attend a training course (at your cost)

The total initial estimated cost is approximately $350 to $400 before ANYONE can purchase ANY handgun.

In another act of creativity, they have put language in place to stop people from purchasing ANY handgun.

• Must demonstrate “proficiency and use”

That clause is similar to the "good and substantial" language that is used by the state to prevent residents from obtaining carry permits - it is as clear as mud.

You can be sure they will use that clause extensively to prevent handgun purchases the same way the "good and substantial" is used to prevent carry permits.

In a final sweeping power grab, the new legislation gives the state the ultimate unconstitutional authority to take all of your firearms:

The bill makes it illegal for a Maryland resident to own ANY firearms if they make any infraction to these rules and mandates minimum sentences of 5 years in prison for "offenders".

This is insanity.

It is estimated that there are between 200 million and 350 million privately owned firearms in the United States. In 2010, there were approximately 11,000 homicide deaths related to firearms.

Those numbers aren't even close.

Truth and logic are on our side. Firearms are not to blame for the ills of our country or our state.

I could go on about the irrational excuses that are being pushed on Marylanders to attempt to defend this assault. Frankly, I would be preaching to the choir.

I want to be absolutely clear about what is happening here:

This bill is nothing but an attempt by the kooks in Annapolis to grab the guns you do have and do everything they can to stop you from owning more.

This bill needs a swift defeat - and we need to be sure to identify those that supported it.

Don't get me wrong, it won't be easy.

There are demagogues in Annapolis standing over the bodies of dead children clamoring to take away the rights of law-abiding Marylanders. Fighting these jokers will be a long, hard road.

However, if gun owners across the state stand in unison to be heard, we can put this bill to rest.

We need YOUR help.

Please sign our petition to show your legislators that you will not tolerate the criminalization of firearm ownership in our state.

Thank you for any help you can offer in this battle. Remember those people in Annapolis today.

In Liberty,

Robin Grammer

Merkle, who attended the rally with her mother, Karen Merkle, said she shoots an AR-15 competitively and was hoping to secure a college scholarship.
She addressed the crowd at the rally with a message for the governor.
“Martin O’Malley, you can’t take my guns, you can’t take my rights,” she said.
