Was it used to protect many slave owners, yes unfortunately... was it written for the purpose of protecting slave owners, ummm no, clearly it was written to not allow the government to have the power to disarm its citizens. Their concerns were obviously rights and the tyrannical potential of a disarmed population.

However, that's not to say that there weren't other parts written to specifically protect slaveholders. A stronger argument would be that if it was written at a time when it protected slaveholding, then it could perhaps be outdated as well, but the flip side is that gun rights were for a completely different reason all together, a reason that will always be prevelant: protection from those trying to do you harm.
