Orlando officials Thursday averted a free-speech fight that threatened to overshadow the city's annual Fourth of July celebration.

The American Civil Liberties Union was girding for battle in support of an Orlando man who originally was told he wouldn't be allowed to hand out campaign fliers for his favorite presidential candidate at the "Fireworks at the Fountain" show at Lake Eola Park.

"I think it's reprehensible that, on the Fourth of July, you'd be threatened with arrest for passing out literature about a presidential candidate in a public park," said Nick Egoroff, the coordinator for the presidential campaign of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas.

This is one Republican presidential candidate the ACLU can support. I doubt they would even support a Democrat as much as they would Ron Paul.

It'll be interesting to see just how much the ACLU will help Ron Paul in the coming months. :D

...and I heard about this originally through our local meetup group.

There's also more to this story. Nick Egoroff, the organizer of the Orlando Ron Paul Meetup Group, was interviewed by two different local talk radio programs in regards to his challenge to the City of Orlando....!

One already passed, it was with Doug Guestloe at 11am today. I don't think there as an archive of it anywhere.

But the other is yet to come: He will be interviewed by Bud Hedinger at 3:45pm today. You can stream it here:

This is great. It sets precedent :) I plan to print the article to carry with me when I pass things on public grounds. I also hope I can find the actual court paperwork too.

Sent him an email, he did a great thing. We won a major victory here and more battles lay ahead. Take heart brothers and sisters, the war is far from over.

I agree. All of Ron Paul's support is from people who are mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore, ala Network. Now the political landscape will feel our anger in the form of the election of Ron Paul.

It's becoming clear that the enemies of Ron Paul are painted in a corner. They can't ignore him, bar him or minimize him, that only makes things worse. They just have to sit back and let happen what they fear the most...let his message be heard.

I caught about 1/2 the exchange on Bud Hedinger Live today, out of Orlando, FL

www.540wfla.com

Bud, who is a devout Neocon was surprisingly polite.

Wish I could figure out how to capture the stream.

Anyway, a great dialog took place.

Just think of the progress we have made though. We've gone from "Who is Ron Paul?" to "Ron's a liberal nut and his supporter's are fruitcakes in so little time. We are already at stage 2 of the plan :) :

1. "First they ignore you,
2. Then they ridicule you,
3. Then they fight you,
4. then you win." Ghandi

Nice to see the ACLU occasionally get it right. Of course this wasn't the mainstream ACLU, but whatever.

"Fireworks at the Fountain" show at Lake Eola Park.

That is a huge event, tons of people go to that. I went a couple of years ago and it was packed

The "ACLU" (except for the "union" part) is one of the most misnamed organizations ever to exist. The name makes some of titles of the bills coming out of Congress look apt.

I'm a card carrying member of the ACLU. I don't agree with every position the organization takes on certain issues, but the organization is consistent and one of the few organizations that has the resources to take on the government consistently across the board on fundamental civil liberty issues. Yeah, they're not strong on the 2nd amendment, but we have the NRA for that.

I hope when Ron Paul wins, his first words are, "And that, my friends, is what blowback looks like."

IJ > ACLU

NRA is compromised in gun-rights. GOA is better than the NRA, doesn't compromise.
