It is ridiculous how they find any excuse to cover garbage topics and justify it by saying "Yes we're covering Paris Hilton, but there's a bigger story here about crime and how different people get different types of treatment" all the while they're showing clips from her in that Carl Jr commercial where she's practically making out with a sandwich.

Oh the producer of girls gone wild has been arrested, this will be a great way to justify showing footage from the girls gone wild videos.

Neil Cavuto doesn't try to hide the fact that he's a big perv. I remember for a while he was doing a story on the Victoria's Secret models every day and made a big joke about it. Oh there's a bigger business implication here folks, right.

Sort of off topic, but every once in a while I notice they'll pick some random teen fighting video from youtube, and try to turn it into a story about "this dangerous trend of the youth getting a thrill out of barbaric acts" again, all the while rolling clips from the video.

Most media companies are owned by a few large conglomerates - News Corp/FOX, NBC/Universal, ABC/Disney, Viacom/Paramount/Dreamworks/MTV/BET/CBS.

They use their news outlets as a way to cross-promote upcoming movies, concerts, album releases, etc. So when the news spends 40 minuets a day talking about Paris, or Brittney, or Tom Cruise etc, it's because they are trying to keep their names in people's mind for whatever they are going to try to sell in the near future.

Almost 2 months later I have not had cable in my house and it's great. No TV except for the occasional NetFlix movie that I rent.
