Actually Becky, my first thought was this:

"He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our People, and eat out their substance."

Inside the Incredibly Repellent Mind of a Bureaucrat

Rod Peet, Jr, tells me he stumbled across this quote "some time ago and it really struck a nerve." Yep, I can see that it would. Ready? We're going deep into the dark side as one of Our Rulers extols her natural passion for totalitarianism:

"...Marthe Kent, OSHA's director of safety standards program and head of the ergonomics effort, couldn't be happier at her job. 'I like having a very direct and very powerful impact on worker safety and health,' she recently told The Synergist, a newsletter of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. 'If you put out a reg, it matters. I think that's really where the thrill comes from. And it is a thrill; it's a high.' Later in the article, she adds, 'I love it; I absolutely love it. I was born to regulate. I don't know why, but that's very true. So as long as I'm regulating, I'm happy.'"

Cleanse your soul of Marthe's filth with another quote. This one hails from a document that declared war on a king and his "Ministry," as England's bureaucratic regime was known in the 18th century: "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government..."

Ah, rebellion. We were born to rebel. I don't know why, but that's very true. So long as we're rebelling against dictators like Marthe, we're happy.

She is, without a doubt, the most honest bureaucrat ever (oxymoron?).

She would no doubt LOVE to decide whether one lives or one dies, all with the stroke of a pen. Power over men, her drug; the state her syringe.

These are the people to fear most. Those who actually believe in their heart that imposing their will through violence "for your own good" is the right and moral thing to do.

Her honesty is worth something, though. I would prefer politicians come out and say they are doing what they do because of their own self-interest as opposed to telling all of us that they are doing it for the "good of the nation." If we had more people in government like her who were honest, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in. It's like all of these debates on the debt ceiling. Few Congressmen actually care about balancing the budget. It would be nice if they were forthcoming about that.

Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robberbarons than under omnipotent moralbusybodies. Therobberbaron's cruelty maysometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. C. S. Lewis English essayist & juvenile novelist (1898 - 1963)

My serious answer: I strongly believe that the mindset shown is the cause for so much grief in this nation, and the world. Most of the people that would crush us beneath an iron-shod boot are not warriors baring sharp teeth, but a group of weak, control-freak, busy-bodies that simply cannot mind their own business and let people live their lives as they see fit. These are the people that shut down a child's lemonade stand, demand that we use light bulbs that require a Hazmat team to remove, outlaw soft drinks of a certain size, and, of course, think that scary looking firearms should be banned so that we can all have a Kumbaya circle jerk. The rank-and-file bureaucrats that think they serve the greater good are far more dangerous than any soldier or law enforcement agent.

I agree-'cept for the safety glasses part, that's just stupid. Ever have to get a piece of aluminum "drilled" out of your eye? I have, and it sucks every bit as bad as it reads. I always wear them now.

To clarify, I do believe you should be free to decide if your eyesight is worth the risk, without bitches like this penning 'regs" for you.

Yeah, I swear in life, my eyeballs seem to have targets on them. 3 separate occasions when I was younger, I've had BB's ricochet and hit me right in the eye. I mean, really, what the fuck are the chances of this occurring even once, let alone 3 separate times? Same thing when grinding/cutting...every fucking time I don't have glasses on, something hits me right in my eye. I have glasses on, nothing ever hits them.

I did landscaping on the local AFB when I got out of the CG for a bit, OSHA worshipers there fo sho. The ONE time I forgot to put my face guard back on after grabbing a drink, a rock flies up and hits me right between the eyes. It cut me pretty good, and I had to hide it all day because this place chased you with a piss cup for even the most minor injuries or accidents. A guy there once barely backed into something with a trailer once, not damaging anything. Off he went into town to piss, failed for weed and was fired(he obviously wasn't smoking at work, we worked ON the AFB, there was NO WAY you could get away with that). Glad I don't work there anymore.

Ask not whether AF quotes Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence too much. For verily I say unto you, the rest of us do not quote them nearly often enough.

'The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.'--Thomas Jefferson

And there are people dumb enough to consider that progress.

OSHA you say.

I deal in the construction world and what is worse is many contractors feed this. When a couple of contractors are having a dispute about stupid crap often times they will call OSHA on the other. They run to nanny in order to get the other kid in trouble.

This OSHA chick was not born to regulate. It sounds like she was born to be a Mother. How could she mix the two up? I bet she would be happier as a mom too.

yup. Liberty is not the natural inclination of Man. Without realizing it, people desperately, biologically, cleave to their place in a caste system.

There was a line in the ancient movie Intolerance (actually a placard, that was a silent movie) that said, when women stop appealing to men they become Reformers. This one likely never appealed to men. Truly a Born Reformer.

Too bad she's not as omniscient and godlike as she would have to be to micromanage every business in the nation. No wonder she presides over a bully that mainly gets used to hurt businesses who have pissed off an employee, or have unscrupulous competitors. I sincerely hope my epitath is someday more meaningful than that.

The bus would drop me off at the shop and my dad would let me play with the welder from 330 to 5. I can weld really F&cking good!!! But even with welding contact you would have to shield your face from the sparks. And could you imagine the savage sun burn you would have on your face after and hour of welding!?
