View Full Version : Al Sharpton attacks nullification

From the Huffington Hate Post:

Historic and symbolic for a multitude of reasons, this inauguration also lands on the same day we honor our greatest civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Later this year, we will commemorate the 50th anniversary of his remarkable ‘I Have A Dream’ speech. And yet here we are, getting ready to honor Dr. King on this national holiday, on the day of President Obama’s inauguration, and we hear talk of nullification. … Dr. King had warned of a governor whose lips drip with the words of ‘interposition and nullification.’ In 2013, looks like we need to heed his warnings yet again. …

[T]he most dangerous talk we’ve heard yet is from Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky who speaks of ‘nullifying’ the president’s executive orders. It is precisely this sort of anti-government hysteria that not only disrespects the office of the presidency and our rule of law, but also incites the radicals on the fringe. There’s no place for such rhetoric when the president has been completely transparent and has been working within the bounds of the law. Buzz words like ‘nullify’ are designed to do one thing and one thing only — create hate and division just as they did during the days of Dr. King.

Sharpton is referring to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) who said on Fox News Wednesday that he would introduce legislation to “nullify” Obama’s executive actions to combat gun violence.

Ya I don't know a lot about that guy, I had no idea he was such a stooge for the establishment, though.

Dumb question--how does the left equate nullification with racism?

So crazy to think that Al Sharpton is given any sort of legitimacy these days.

I remember watching him on TV in the 80's, and back then everybody knew he was a loudmouthed clown.

Al Sharpton pulling the race card on nullification. Does he know how to do anything else?

It is precisely this sort of anti-government hysteria that not only disrespects the office of the presidency and our rule of law, but also incites the radicals on the fringe.

I would argue that every President since FDR has disrespected the office of the presidency (and many before them) and that this sort of anti-government language is EXACTLY what is needed.

Here is an interesting article on Dr. Martin Luther King and Nullification. Nullification and civil disobedience are just tools to resist. It really depends on who is wielding them.

One single abuse of the process of nullification, however, should not serve to invalidate the entire nullification movement, which has resisted the Alien and Sedition Acts, Fugitive Slave Acts (and even the Dred Scott decision itself), the misguided War on Drugs, and a host of other federal abuses. Especially when one considers that the legitimate applications of nullification are rooted in the same beliefs Dr. King expressed, and which have been expressed by people of many different religious beliefs, that an unjust law is no law at all.

As the nation regresses such fools will rise and be listened to. LOL This guy isn't even worth a post or a thread. Let's ignore these nothings.

I would just ignore him. Socialists like him hate nullification, and will always hate nullification, because the idea - by design - threatens central power.

In Charleston today, John C Calhoun statue stands very tall on a high pedestal with his back to the North.

From what I read, I still don't think you can honestly collude Calhoun's pro-slavery view with his development of State nullification as a reasonable nullification=racist argument. He developed nullification to address Federal Trade tariffs that would have "favored northern manufacturing interests over southern agricultural concerns." He ALSO happened to be the most pro-slave person in the Senate (even though his slavery=great argument was less prevalent than the slavery=necessary evil argument even in the South). Like I said, nullification is a resistance tool and its good/bad moral nature depends on the wielder. Just because the guy who came up with the idea is a racist, doesn't mean his idea is racist or illegitimate necessarily.

I didn't say it was. People infer what they want to infer rightly and especially wrongly. I.E. Sharpton

Especially wrongly. We should just scrap the entire Constitution because eleven signers owned slaves.

Don't you understand what happened the last time people (southerners) tried that? DO YOU WANT ANOTHER CIVIL WAR

Followed by asking them back, "I've got X guns, how many guns do you own?" Maybe they'll put 2and2.

What I find interesting is that he only mentions a governmental action once: 14th minute. Other than that I think he is talking only to the people, not governmental action, he speaks to content of character, except for the 14 minute.

Actually the first time I have watched it all. Great Speaker. This needed to be posted here. This is where more of the especially wrong inferring takes place. Because nullification was associated with civil rights, it must be an evil tool. This is shortsighted, but how many people see it.
