Every voting session this week has resulted in more public money being committed to some Euro-cause or other. A modest British proposal slightly to reduce the number of plenary sessions in Strasbourg was thrown out by two-to-one. The MEP who sits next to me declared loudly, in French, "The English arrived late, and now they want to change things!' (Not, I stress, Syed, whom you see in the clip, and who is a patriotic Thatcherite; the chap on the other side.)
The odd thing is that MEPs and Eurocrats have sincerely convinced themselves that the preservation of their perks is a public interest, and that their boondoggles are stimulating the economy. The recently deceased prize-winning economist, James Buchanan, who taught us that opinion-formers generally pursue their personal incentives, would have had a field day.
