Thomas hasn't spoken during the court's oral arguments in nearly seven years. He's been silent since February 2006, when he asked a question in a death penalty case.

Thomas says he gets all the information he needs from reading briefs and does not need to question the lawyers who argue cases before the court.

But Thomas's animosity for Yale is apparently enough to break his silence.

Thomas wrote in his autobiography that he regrets attending Yale, which he described as a bastion of the privileged where he felt isolated because of his race.

According to SCOTUSBlog, Thomas spoke Monday to quip that a law degree from Yale might make a lawyer incompetent, rather than prove he or she is competent.
