View Full Version : Act now! Save lives, amend the Constitution.

Consensus is being reached. Piers Morgan, John Stewart, Diane Feinstein. Joe Biden, President Obama and countless others have agreed that action must be taken to prevent insane people from murdering others. Can't you just give up a little bit of your rights to save lives? It could save children from a horrible death. Let's be reasonable and rational. Sure, we can never stop all murders, but we can make them less likely to occur. We can prevent some of these incidents with one simple step. Please people, be sensible. It can not be denied that a few prudent modifications to our legal framework will prevent the death of innocents.
To achieve this, we must follow the rule of law, and the established procedure. It's called a Constitutional Amendment. This is the hurdle that must be passed to make changes to the Bill of Rights. This is the only legal route, and we want to be just as cautious and prudent with the process, as we are with determining which rights to abridge.
Therefore, let us work together now to amend the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
Be it known that:
- copycat crimes are a real phenomena, and pose a clear and present danger to all Americans.
- people with certain mental defects can be influenced by entertainment, including, but not limited to movies, television, news, internet and video games.
- people with certain mental defects can be desensitized by entertainment, including, but not limited to movies, television, news, internet and video games.
- children and young adults are terribly susceptible to outside influences, especially those of a violent or anti-social nature.
Therefore, it is proposed that the First Amendment to the Constitution be modified to read:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble in designated areas, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Freedom of speech, being a founding value of our great country, shall be encouraged for many purposes, although exceptions are necessary when it is determined to be in the best interest of society at large. Such exceptions include, but are not limited to; speech which advocates, incites, glorifies or publicizes violence or murder, including any entertainment or medium which depicts or infers violence, murder or the taking of life, real or virtual."
---
This slight modernization of the Bill of Rights is the most rational, reasonable and easily achieved method to reduce the amount of violence and murder in the United States. Our Founding Fathers would agree. Please contact your Congress members and State legislatures. We must start today to implement this common sense fix to our broken system. It can not wait until tomorrow. The time is now!

Already done.

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group

But then the president would have to violate the Constitution not only during war time, but just to get us into his pet splendid little war. I don't think the Military Industrial Complex will go for this.
Besides, given recent trends we've made note of here, going down this road could result in Prozac commercials becoming classified as 'hate speech'. And we can't have that.

I could actually see many of the celebrities (film and music) going along with this part.

If they were consistent, they would go along with every word.

On a serious note, I originally had at the end of the proposed Amendment that "nothing in this Amendment shall be construed to apply to government", but removed it for brevity.

Still waiting for some endorsements. Step up Hollywood, let's save some lives. It's for the children!
Support this proposed Amendment to replace the First:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble in designated areas, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Freedom of speech, being a founding value of our great country, shall be encouraged for many purposes, although exceptions are necessary when it is determined to be in the best interest of society at large. Hey Joe Biden, you want to address dangerous video games? Here's the Amendment that is required.
