They've been trying to warn us of an Out of Control State for years. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Saw this during the annual marathon on New Years. Gave me goosebumps. There is another episode with Dean Stockwell about war that is absolutely a must watch too that I suggest everyone seek out. Fantastic show.

It's called 'A Quality of Mercy' but I can't find it on Youtube, sadly. That and Obsolete Man are my two favorite episodes of the series.

Season 2's "Eye of the Beholder" is also another fantastic State-centered episode.

For anyone that hasn't watch this, please do yourself a favor and mark out 30 minutes of your time. It really is a moving episode. Funny that this sort of thing could actually be shown on prime time television. Just shows how far the culture has fallen since.

We are, all of us, obsolete, in the global Borg hive of the future.

Agree. It's amazing how well these episodes old-up despite being 50+ years old.

Agree. It's amazing how well these episodes old-up despite being 50+ years old. Good art about tyranny is timeless. "We" was written ~1930, and you can imagine the events therein transpiring today. Ditto 1984. :( The future is fail.

wow thanks for posting this. Great stuff. Too bad T.V. today is not 1/100th as intelligent as it apparently was.

Did anyone notice the cigarette advertisement by Rod at the end? Kind of off topic, but it just makes me think how much things have changed. Then I flip through the channels on regular TV and see "Talk to your doctor about... (insert ailment / drug here)", and realize how much things have changed, the more they remain the same.

Amazing how anti communist shows like this would not be allowed today.
Even Star Trek had episodes against communism like This Side of Paradise:

They clearly make the case that we need challenges to improve.

Oh, it's Burgess Meredith.

If I recall correctly. he and Jack Klugman are tied for most appearances on the show over the years. Each of them starred in four episodes, and all of those episodes are great.
