REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) -- Call her the girl with no name.

A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means "light breeze" in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government.

Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named. In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don't question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment. Parents can take from the list or apply to a special committee that has the power to say yea or nay.

In Blaer's case, her mother said she learned the name wasn't on the register only after the priest who baptized the child later informed her he had mistakenly allowed it.

Two things I like about this article:

1) That a 15 yo is allowed to sue anyone.
2) That the state is allowing itself to be sued. (Think CT).

btw: I like unusual names!

Something strange seems to happen to your decision-making skills when you're a celebrity thinking up baby names.

A nice Emily or Sarah or Melissa? Soo not Hollywood. Names like Brian, William or Ken? Yeah, right. Because, apparently, when you're a big-time star -- be it actor, musician, model or athlete -- it seems there is a weird-quotient that must be factored in when it comes to your child's name. Whether you borrow from the supermarket (Apple, Sage, Thyme), an atlas (Bronx, Brooklyn, Memphis) or superhero-sound-alikes (Kal-el, Moxie CrimeFighter, Pilot Inspektor), stars are guaranteeing their offspring will stand out in one way or another.

Here's a list of ParentDish's 100 weirdest baby names, in alphabetical order. Hey, the richer the parents are, the less likely you are to be teased. Just ask Tallulah, Rumer and Scout.

They forgot one. Captain Munnerlyn, plays defense for Carolina. I couldn't believe that was his real name? What parent names their child 'captain'?

I can't believe I'm the only one who has a problem with a "government approved list of baby names".

It used to be that parents wouldn't name a child something really weird because that kid would get teased at school. Now, teasing is a taserable offense, and some countries I guess, have now come up with lists of names that "protect" children. God help us.

True story. Around the age of 13 I was grounded for most of the summer. I was bored as possible and decided to clean/rummage through the garage. Came across my dads old high school year book and decided to laugh at the 80's style. Saw a goofy looking kid with bushy fro. Looked at his name and the poor kid was named First: Harry Last: Dick.

I would have hated my parents forever.

my poor daughter married a guy with the last name Dick - and refused to not take his name (ah youth) so at the *alternate* rehearsal dinner there was a list formed of names they're not allowed to name children. Harry was at the top of the list. Richard.. another no no. Some of the others were Peter, Iva, Ima, Monster, Willard, William and someone added Happy to the list - the kids are both TALL so dwarf names just wouldn't occur to them (I would hope)

Three names from baseball stand out - Rusty Kuntz, Peter LaCock, and Johnny Dickshot.

When I worked in parole in New Jersey, I knew of an inmate named Richard Head, and he did not go by Richard.
