NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say a young woman stumbling around on a Manhattan subway platform not far from Times Square fell onto the tracks and was killed by a train.

The accident happened at around 5 a.m. on New Year's Day at the No. 2 line station on 34th Street and Seventh Avenue. That's one stop from where revelers gather in Times Square to see the ball drop.

Police say the victim was in her 20s. Her name wasn't immediately released.

Subway deaths are common in the city. Last year, according to a report in the Daily News, there was about a fatality a week.

But track deaths have been getting extra scrutiny in recent weeks after two men were shoved to their deaths in December.

Imagine if there was a random shooting on the subway once a week what kind of outcry there would be! This is a preventable problem. The government could put up barriers like there are in other countries. Yes it would cost money, but so would an assault weapons ban. One "fix" guarantees a good result, the other does not.

Maybe the city government should but the federal government is broke.

I still think NY wont put up rails/walls to separate the platform and the train. Too many people would vandalize it and make it ugly.

How much will it cost the feds to implement an assault weapons ban?

Where in the world did we subject hop from subway guards to assault weapons?

Doesn't matter what it costs though I'm against it...

If this were a private train system the organization would have been shutdown by the state. Since in this case its the state who runs it, no one gets looked into.

My point is that if Obama was consistent (and he isn't) he'd be freaking out over the subway deaths and try to do something about them like he is regarding guns. I agree that the city of NY should handle this. I also think that local schools should handle their own security and the feds should get out of the way instead of using the crises and yet another way to spend more money and take more freedom.

Anyone read The Master And Margarita or seen the movie? This story is amazingly like the Berlioz decapitation scene.

What she said, or people should just stay the hell back away from the drop off between waiting area and rail pit.

Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.

I can't believe this is a story....it's really only a story because of the two recent "track pushing" deaths. There are signs everywhere in the subway saying that something like 130 people fell onto the tracks and 47 were killed in 2011.

She was obviously drunk, ban alcohol. Or require sobriety tests to enter the subway

That's probably why they're increasing the media attention for these subway incidents. They want to round up support to steal & spend some money

If there's two things NYC just loves to do, its stealing and spending money

It may be more cost effective to just ban writing about these accidents in the news, that way noone worries about it
