Asked as he left a meeting of the Senate Democratic caucus whether a deal would be struck today, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) replied: “No, I’d be shocked. I think the parties are much farther apart than I hoped they’d be by now, and that the country thought they’d be when negotiations started on Friday.”

Socialist Sanders blames "extremist" Republicans

-
Sen. Bernie Sanders said “nobody wants” the economically damaging combination of across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases, but that “right-wing extremists” in the House were preventing a deal by refusing to compromise on tax hikes on the rich.

“I don’t think there is an equivalence,” Sanders explained. “People are saying, ‘Well shouldn’t the rich pay a little more in taxes and then shouldn’t we cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid?’ The answer is, ‘no.’ The wealthy are doing phenomenally well. Their taxes are down. The middle-class is hurting. We have the most unequal distribution of wealth and income. It should not be a balance on the middle-class and the rich.”

Update:

Reid has proposed raising the threshold for extending current tax rates on individual income to $360,000 and on family income to $450,000, according to Democratic senators who received a briefing from him. Republicans have countered with a proposal to raise the threshold for individuals to $450,000 and families to $550,000.

But the estate tax and the sequester, an automatic $109 billion cut to domestic and defense spending next year, remain outstanding issues.

Republicans want to extend the estate tax at its current 35 percent rate and exempt inheritances below $5 million.

Both sides want to halt the sequester but cannot agree how to offset its cost.

Democrats say the revenues collected from raising taxes on the wealthy should pay for the sequester, while many Republicans say that is a nonstarter.

Its all about perception...

If the markets acted rationally we would have imploded by now and gold would be over 10k....

I've been stacking both gold and silver since the absolutely abhorrent smackdowns post QE4 (perhaps the most blatant manipulation of the metals since 2-29-12) because i'm anticipating they come to some BS deal that involves a raising of the debt ceiling and more inflation.

If we go over the cliff the PERCEPTION will be our spending and debt will be reduced and our dollar will strengthen... i'm sure TPTB will use it as a way to smash the metals some more.

Reuters source: Emerging "fiscal cliff" deal...

• …would extend unemployment benefits for a year
• …would raise estate tax from 35 pct to 40 pct

It still seems to me like a deal to extend the Bush tax cuts for 98% of Americans is a better option than allowing all of the Bush tax cuts to expire, which is the default option if Congress doesn't pass anything. Allowing all of the Bush tax cuts to expire is the worst case scenario. Even if the Republicans in the house and the Senate simply vote "present," they should still allow this deal to go through in order to avoid allowing all of the Bush tax cuts to expire.

itshappening
12-31-2012, 01:24 PM
Here's what the deal looks like so far:

Under the proposed accord being hammered out by Biden and McConnell, households earning less than that would largely escape higher income tax bills, though couples earning more than $300,000 a year and individuals earning more than $250,000 would lose part of the value of their exemptions and itemized deductions, under the terms of the emerging agreement.

Low-income households would also benefit from a five-year extension of credits for college tuition and the working poor first enacted as part of Obama’s stimulus package in 2009. And businesses would see a variety of popular tax breaks extended, including a credit for research and development.

The tax on inherited estates would rise from 35 percent to 40 percent, though Democrats agreed to keep in place the current exemption for estates worth up to $5 million. And nearly 30 million households would be protected from paying the costly alternative minimum tax for the first time — either on their 2012 tax returns or at any time in the future. The developing agreement calls for a permanent fix.

The two sides also appeared to have reached consensus on unemployment benefits, with Republicans acceding to Democratic demands to keep benefits flowing to the long-term unemployed for another year. Medicare payments would not be cut for doctors next year, and the cost of preserving those programs would not be offset with other spending cuts.

Obama calls the tax increases "a first step".

Not trying to offend , but if someone thinks spending is not a problem , they must be, at best, mildly retarded....

Harkin is definitely one of the five worst members of the U.S Senate.

lol

Or, terribly honest. Who does he really represent? And why would spending be a problem for those folks?

Let me spend your money, I guarantee it won't be a problem for me!:p

This is disgraceful. I would double down, take us over the cliff, and let taxes go up. I'd rather patch up the deficit with revenue than write more blank checks.

Theft is a graver injustice than deficit.

More spending in the bill due to unemployment benefit extension.

I don't see how conservatives and support that.

Well, if you just look in the confines of this bill, I'd expect the higher taxes on the >$400K incomes would more than cover that. The whole thing is a patch with each grabbing splinters, not a fix.

In this case, though, the taxes go up MORE otherwise, so the leverage is unusual.

I agree that the leverage is unusual with this due to the tax situation.....

Apparently they have a deal on raising our taxes (no surprise there) but can't come to terms on spending cuts.

The house is not expected to vote on anything and they're claiming they may come to a deal tomorrow? How in the hell can they come to a deal tomorrow?

They could just extend the tax cuts retroactively.

It isn't an "economy crashes at midnight without a deal" thing. Cuts and tax hikes will occur over time and as was pointed out, they could wait even a month or two and make any tax changes retroactive to the start of the year.

Did you see my above post? The proposed cuts are 3/10 of 1% of spending.

That would probably still be the biggest cut in spending they've ever enacted.

Amazing isn't it?

Raise taxes, don't cut any spending...

That's the deal?

This will hurt jobs, which will hurt revenue, and we'll end up even worse than before.

Hey, what have you got against drinking :)

Seriously though, ask the uncle to spend less money. Tell him to switch to boxed wine, bottom shelf blended whiskey or 24oz Steel Reserve.

This is a great comment from Freerepublic of all places:

-
The Food Stamp President wants to go over the cliff to collapse the economy and then take complete charge as the savior (aka dictator) of the country. He and his staff are complete psychos and anyone would be an idiot to take their word on any deal. Like the last proposed debt ceiling deal, he changed the terms after the deal was announced.

edit - looks like taxes only being addressed, sequester postponed for 2 months.

I think it's silly to all of a sudden call something "fiscal cliff" when we're already 16 trillion in debt.

The phrase is used as an excuse to take more of your money. We are going to hear about these problems every 3-6 months now. There is no danger so long as the petrodollar exists. And the military will bomb as many overseas kids as it takes to make sure the petrodollar remains intact. America owns 66% of the world. There is still stuff for our empire to grab at the slowest pace they can possibly take.
