I've been looking at getting behind the NRA financially to help combat any new legislation. Is it worth it or do you think better places exist to contribute to for gun rights?

The NRA is controlled opposition.

Definitely go with the GOA.

If not them, the National Association for Gun Rights is also decent.

The NRA has become less about rights, and more a lobby group for manufacturers. As well, they've become wasteful as far as I'm concerned. They're already well funded.

The other organizations would give a better return.

Sure.....I'll get behind them.

And push them into traffic.

I really never thought about joining anything but always thought if I was it would be "Gun Owners of America" instead of the NRA. Thanks to the mainstream media's over the top campaign to curtail gun ownership and a complicit government, it looks like now is the time to get involved.

There are State groups too. Virginia has the VCDL (http://www.vcdl.org/). Your state may have something like this.

I wouldn't go THAT far, having known some top NRA officials pretty well. I think the problem is that more than anything the NRA wants to be a player. They are willing to compromise because they want to be in on the action. It is a little like being a Senator and compromising on some issues so you can take a hard line on others without being ignored.

That having been said, I quit the NRA in disgust when they endorsed McCain and have not looked back. The endorsement of the unelectable Mitt just confirmed my opinion. But I might go back if they sail through this storm without my rights being scathed.

Join the GOA for the same reasons you would contribute to the Mises Institute - to keep the torch burning. Join the NRA and try to influence it if you want a voice in DC that legislators listen to. Nobody listens to GOA. They listen to NRA. And those are the painful facts.

The NRA doesn't really fight for the 2nd amendment. They make a lot of compromises.

Financially go with the GOA or Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership. If the NRA grows a pair, then yes, you may want to send them financial help. Right now though a LOT of us don't trust them any more than we would trust romney.

Larry Pratt of GOA is the only one willing to not cower behind 'it's too soon' while the left uses the political cover of the shooting to push their agenda.

NRA has a press conference tomorrow.

I'd support Larry over the NRA for now. Especially until I know what the NRA is going to say.

The only thing the NRA does well is take money for their own purposes.

You don't want to get behind the NRA, considering there are plenty of groups in front of them now.
Gunowners definitely.
If you're in Virginia and not a VCDL member then you're a joke. I have never run into it's like. Every year they swarm the legislative offices in Richmond - while wearing sidearms - to tell the delegates that they would really like their support.

I don't know of another group that sends a yearly message at the start of the session - "Hi, we're armed, we have a lot of members, and we have no problem letting you know who's boss in this relationship."
