MAN ATTEMPTS TO OPEN FIRE ON CROWD AT MOVIE THEATER, ARMED OFF-DUTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY DROPS HIM WITH ONE BULLET

With one shot, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy took down a gunman who attempted to opened fire at a crowded movie theater lobby during a late night showing of “The Hobbit” in San Antonio, WOAI reports.

Police say a gunman chased patrons from the nearby China Garden Restaurant into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater at around 9 p.m. on Sunday. An employee of the restaurant reportedly walked in the establishment looking for a woman.

When the woman, also reportedly a restaurant employee, wasn’t there, the man pulled out a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

“It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater,” Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.

The commotion sent horrified restaurant patrons into the movie theater lobby, but the gunman followed. He again attempted to open fire, and this time his gun didn’t jam. He shot one man in the chest before Antu says an off-duty sheriff’s deputy working security the theater shot him once, dropping him to the floor.

“The officer involved, she took the appropriate action to try to keep everyone safe in the movie theater,” Antu added.

Due to the off-duty deputy’s bravery, the gunman was not able to make it into the theater where he could have potentially taken many lives.

The gunman and the man he shot remain hospitalized, according to WOAI.

If the gunman survives his failed shooting spree, officials say he will likely face a charge of attempted capital murder as he allegedly shot at the San Antonia police car on Southwest Military Drive as he ran from the restaurant and into the theater.

Police have yet to identify a motive for the shooting or detail the relationship between the gunman and the woman he was searching for at the restaurant.

You know, it might not be a bad idea to have a stickied thread called Retweets. Where you can just skip to the newest post and see if it's something people would want to retweet.

You don't really need a sticky for that kind of thread, just a subscription to it. if it starts bumping a lot, it will bring a lot more people on board.

Welcome to Texas. We stop mass shooters.

Texans have a lot of pride in their state I have noticed. I know there are a lot of good people from Texas, but there also a lot of duds like the Bushes, Rick Perry, and Ann Richards. Also you Texans didn't do a very good job of stopping the burning and mass shootings of the Branch Davidians in 1993. It is OK to have pride in your state, but to act like your state is better than others at stopping mass murder is not really true.

From the article:

Garcia pulled out a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

Garcia reportedly shot one man in the chest before Antu says an off-duty sheriff’s deputy working security the theater shot him once, dropping him to the floor.

What's disturbing about this is how a group of people allowed themselves to be herded from the restaurant, across the parking lot and into the theater by a one guy with a jammed gun. Could a bunch of people act more like cattle if they tried?

I'd submit that it's a learned response.

A few months ago, I was taking some force on force training to get better at handling various shooter scenarios. One scenario involved a convenience store. In this scene, I was a CHL guy just minding my own business. Suddenly, someone else starts waving a gun around and telling people to get into a back room. I ducked behind cover and drew my weapon. They saw me and yelled at me to get in the room.

And I went. Gun drawn. Like a little sheeple. :(

Hopefully, I learned from this practice, but my point is that, without training and practice, people will respond incorrectly or as the Bad Guy demands.

Hah, true. When the gun jammed you'd think someone would have the guts to tackle the bastard.

Actually it is true. Seriously bringing Waco into this? Those were the Feds and even in Texas people aren't foolish enough to mess with an army and many consider them the "good guys". This is the third incident I have seen this year where a civilian (I'm counting an off duty cop) prevented what could have been a much worse tragedy by drawing and dropping the shooter.
