He was a "Good Soldier". I believe he may have actually believed he was doing the right thing for his country.
He fell on his sword, Followed orders up to his death.

Such soldiers were also a project of MK Ultra, (there were many projects and sub-projects).

He did not do it alone,, others were never brought to trial.
