View Full Version : NRA member Sen. Manchin says Newtown shooting should open assault weapons debate

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, an "A" rated member of the NRA, on Monday questioned the availability of assault weapons and suggested Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn. has opened up the issue for debate.

Manchin said past debates about assault weapons have been shut down over a fear of destroying Second Amendment rights. But the senator said last Friday's shooting changed all that. "The massacre of so many innocent children has changed—has changed America. We've never seen this happen," Manchin said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Manchin issued criticism of assault weapons, saying,*"I don't know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle.*I don't know anybody that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about."

Manchin, who received an endorsement from the NRA's Political Victory Fund for his 2012 re-election race, is one of the most prominent gun rights advocates in the Senate to speak about assault weapons in the wake of the shooting.

Assuming EVERYONE was a good little statist and NOBODY had an "assault" rifle, would a repeat of Newtown, CT be prevented?

Answer: Ummm, NO!

wow! I don't know anyone that goes out hunting with a MACHINE GUN either. And it's called a MAGAZINE, not a clip moron!

I do know people that hunt with "assault weapons"(sic), but plenty of people hunt with these firearms. The AR-15 is the most common firearm in competitive shooting right now, followed by the M1A1 (civi semi-auto version of the M14).

This guy has a "A" rating with the NRA and hunts and doesn't know this stuff? RRRiiiiiiiggghhhhttttt....

Wasn't it the NRA who endorsed Harry Reid in his race? They really are just a completely useless organization. They still haven't issued any kind of statement after this shooting. They're just cowering in fear and not doing a thing to respond to all of these spineless politicians seeking to disarm us.

They gave him a D meaning "Leans Anti-Gun: usually against us". GOA knows what's up.

Norway for example

Originally, Breivik intended to try to obtain weapons in Germany or Serbia if his mission in Prague failed. The Czech disappointment led him to procure his weapons through legal channels.[34] He decided to obtain a semi-automatic rifle and a Glock pistol legally in Norway, noting that he had a "clean criminal record, hunting license, and two guns (a Benelli Nova 12 gauge Pump-action shotgun and a .308 Bolt-action rifle) already for seven years", and that obtaining the guns legally should therefore not be a problem.[30]

Upon returning to Norway, Breivik obtained a legal permit for a .223-caliber Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic carbine, ostensibly for the purpose of hunting deer. He bought it in late 2010 for €1,400 ($2000). He wanted to purchase a 7.62x39mm Ruger Mini-30 semi-automatic carbine, but gun laws in Norway may have prevented Breivik from obtaining it.

Getting a permit for the pistol proved more difficult, as he had to demonstrate regular attendance at a sport shooting club.[32] He also bought 10 30-round magazines for the rifle from a United States supplier, and 6 magazines for the pistol (including 4 30-round magazines) in Norway. From November 2010 to January 2011 he went through 15 training sessions at the Oslo Pistol Club, and by mid-January his application to purchase a Glock pistol was approved.[35][36]

I wish there were something I could say to make you feel better, but...

When a reporter asked NRA “A” rated Colorado Governor Bill Owens what gun owners might do in his next election — after he had supported half a dozen gun control measures — Owens quipped, “What are they going to do? Vote Democrat?”

Unfortunately, the NRA is just another tool of the NWO/Banking cartel. Like others have said, support GOA.

This seems to be a trend. I've seen a number of cases where a NRA "A" was a GOA "D". Congress refuses to acknowledge that the GOA exists and allways points to the NRA as the "pro-gun people", despite their rolling over on many gun control issues.

Has anyone ever done a comparison of these two organizations ratings?
