Outrageous HSBC Settlement Proves the Drug War is a Joke

If you've ever been arrested on a drug charge, if you've ever spent even a day in jail for having a stem of marijuana in your pocket or "drug paraphernalia" in your gym bag, Assistant Attorney General and longtime Bill Clinton pal Lanny Breuer has a message for you:

Bite me.

Breuer this week signed off on a settlement deal (http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/10/news/companies/hsbc-money-laundering/)with the British banking giant HSBC that is the ultimate insult to every ordinary person who's ever had his life altered by a narcotics charge. Despite the fact that HSBC admitted to laundering billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels (among others) and violating a host of important banking laws (from the Bank Secrecy Act to the Trading With the Enemy Act), Breuer and his Justice Department elected not to pursue criminal prosecutions of the bank, opting instead for a "record" financial settlement (http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/12/11/hsbc-to-pay-record-fine-to-settle-money-laundering-charges/) of $1.9 billion, which as one analyst noted is about five weeks of income (http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Columns/2012/13/Too-Big-to-Jail-HSBCs-Fine-Didnt-Fit-the-Crime.aspx#page1) for the bank.

Government and Wall Street ALWAYS split the profits... how many firms made $100's of millions, if not billions, and the SEC/DOJ/US government splits that RICO spoils from crimes with the very criminals? Morgan Stanley, Well Fargo Wachovia, Citiglobe, Government Sachs, JP Morgan Chase WaMu... etc etc etc.

I used to say Washington DC political parties were like a feud between the Gambino and Genovese crime families. I was wrong. It's the one political crime party running a monopoly between, the criminals with money and the criminals with power. They take care of one another at the country's and people's expense.

Shit like this should be in the headlines for months as a travesty against justice and freedom, but this will promptly be forgotten in about 3 days.
