Recap -- In the first hour, research scientist John Lott (http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/) reacted to the Newtown school shooting and calls for greater gun control in the wake of the tragedy. He recognized that proponents of stricter gun laws are "trying to do what they think is best," but disagreed that legislation could prevent such events. Additionally, Lott observed that the numerous shootings that have taken place over the last several years have all occurred in locations where guns are banned. He also acknowledged that preventing these horrific crimes is exceedingly difficult, because the shooters appear to spend an inordinate amount of time planning the event and often intend to die. Lott did suggest that the media needs to refrain from overly publicizing the shooter's name, since macabre notoriety seems to be one of the driving forces behind these crimes.

During the second hour, author and psychologist Peter Breggin (http://www.breggin.com/) shared his thoughts on the tragedy. Noting the similarities between suspected shooter Adam Lanza and previous mass shooters, he stressed that "all of them got involved with psychiatry." Beyond that, he contended that Lanza was very likely on some form of psychiatric medication which led to him "going over the edge." Therefore, he advocated for less reliance on medication in favor of "more caring, outreaching ways" to help kids that have gone astray. Beggin also opined that violent video games could be another influence behind these shootings, since they "inure people to harming others."

The latter half of the program was devoted to Open Lines and featured numerous callers responding to the tragic events in Newtown. Anthony in Oregon blamed the lack of a moral compass in society, lackadaisical parenting, and over medicated children as reasons behind the spate of shootings. Echoing those sentiments, Christian in Los Angeles lamented that there is a "leadership gap in government and especially in family." He reasoned that the government needs to find a way to give young people hope through these difficult economic times. On that note, T.S. in Montana theorized that the modern economy, which often sees both parents working full time, has resulted in the weak family bonds which may play a role in these tragic events unfolding

Of course, that's a very minimal recap. Discussion was actually rather broad and covered a great many outling topics of interest. Some of which have been mentioned here. As well, some of which would end up in hot topics under normal circumstances like mind control, the flip side of armed guards at the door as well as arming teachers and that stuff from some of the callers as well as the participants was discussed. Except in logical terms without the main stream hype.

Breggin was also an expert psychologist who participated in the Columbine case and wrote a pretty good book if anyone is interested.

A Healing Plan for a Nation in Crisis
by Peter Breggin, MD

Dr. Breggin was motivated to write Reclaiming Our Childre by witnessing , along with millions of other Americans, the events surrounding the shootings at Columbine High School as they unfolded first on television and then in the print media. Dr. Breggin’s book begins with a description and analysis of these tragic events in Littleton, Colorado, and then moves on to examine our government’s response at the White House Conference on Mental Health. He criticizes biological psychiatry and psychiatric drugs as a solution to the suffering and rebelliousness of America’s children. He also presents strong evidence that psychiatric drugs commonly cause psychoses and aggression in children, and that they probably contributed to individual cases of school violence.

Reclaiming Our Children discusses the overall situation of children in America, including the stresses on their lives in the family, school, and community. The author urges parents, teachers, and other concerned citizens to retake responsibility for all our children. He sees the necessity of transforming ourselves and our society in order to meet the needs of all of our children for meaningful relationships with adults, as well as for unconditional love, rational discipline, inspiring education, and play. He makes specific recommendations for improving family and school life based on sound psychological and ethical principles.
