Rob Parker managed to turn Stephen A. Smith into the voice of reason on "First Take" on Thursday. This unexpected development occurred after Parker asked his fellow panelists on ESPN's debate program if Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is "a brother or is he a cornball brother?"

Even Skip Bayless -- no stranger to introducing race into conversations about Griffin -- had to ask "What does that mean?"

“Well, he’s black, he kind of does his thing. But he’s not really down with the cause, he’s not one of us,” Parker answered Bayless. “He’s kind of black. But he’s not really the guy you’d really want to hang out with because he’s off to do something else.”

Griffin II told USA TODAY Sports he was baffled by the comments but wouldn't fire back Thursday night, even though Parker's remarks ignited the blogosphere and sparked angry social media responses. A few minutes later after his father spoke, Griffin III tweeted to supporters: "I'm thankful for a lot of things in life and one of those things is your support. Thank you."

Griffin grew up overseas. He has a more diverse outlook. He probably can't relate the the American way of life that most of us live. Probably a good thing.

"You want to be defined by your work ethic, the person you are, your character, your personality," he said. "I am an African-American in America. But I don't have to be defined by that." - RG III

Seriously. Good for RG III. Don't let half-baked ESPN d-nozzles get under your skin.

lol. Well, you can't plan that sort of shit. :D

Seems Stephen A. Smith has mellowed a little with age and I've come to respect him for not being afraid to take unpopular positions or express things he can expect to get some heat for. Crazily enough, this was one of them in some sense. But at least when someone tells you what they really think, you can have an honest discussion with them.

I don't know much about this particular subject besides the links here, btw.

But he’s not really down with the cause, he’s not one of us,
...meaning what? He's not a socialist?

RG3 refused to say previously who he voted for. Some speculation around that he's a Republican and voted for Mitt. Not sure if this is what the comment was about or whether it's simply racial, basically calling RG3 an Uncle Tom. Stick to football ESPN.

The commentator also didn't like that he has a white fiance.

And if the commentator weren't who he was, he'd already be fired for that one.
